Silver Surfer villian...

Hey guys/gals… I was reading the thread about the best villians in comics and got to thinking about a villian of Silver Surfers. I was never an avid comic book reader but I picked up one everyonce in a while so I need a little help remembering the name. I think his name was Thanos, maybe Thanatos… something like that. Can anyone give me his name and what his MO is?

You’re thinking of Thanos. He’s a Titanian Eternal (a race of beings which originated on Earth and are pretty much immortal, Eternals established several colonies in outer space, including one on Titan, Saturn’s moon) who was deformed from birth. At some point in his life he had the opportunity to view the Marvel Universe’s anthropomorphic Death, and he fell in love with “her”, and dedicated his life to winning “her” love.

His M. O. is pretty much to amass as much power as he can and then try to destroy as much life as he can. His original campaign against living beings everywhere was waged with an army of outlaws, later, he gathered the six Infinity Gems and embedded them in a glove (“The Infinity Gauntlet”) and this gave him ultimate power over everything, but then, Death rejected him because “she” was now less powerful than him, and this was a problem for Death.

I think recently, he has been turned into a hero of some sort. Maybe someone more in tune with today’s Marvel comics can be more helpful there.

That would be Thanos, the mad Titan. He’s the son of Mentor, leader of the Titans (Eternals that live on Saturn) and brother of Eros (starfox), the erstwhile Avenger.

He killed his mother (vivisection) out of hatred of what he was (He was creepy looking, while other Titans were godlike)…attacked his homeworld, etc.

He was a nihilist, and sought to be the consort of Lady Death. To that end, he stole the Infinity Gems, constructed the Infinity Gauntlet, and became a God, at one point killing half of the universe, slaughtering the remaining heroes, and imprisoning all of the cosmic-class beings in a menagerie. One of his favorite pastimes is killing lots of people and tormenting the Surfer, who he views as his opposite in the universe.

He’s had a lot of ups and downs, and has recently done the ‘dark hero’ route…dunno his present whereabouts, though.

Be wary of stories featuring Thanos that aren’t written by Jim Starlin; other writers just don’t have a grasp of this character. I’m looking at you, Peter “Let’s have Thanos lose a fistfight with Ka-Zar” David.
