Simple question about dial up networking

Does anyone know how to find the version on dial up networking? I have look all over the microsoft website.

AFAIK, there is no “version” per se. It’s not a a distinct product, but a part of the Windows OS. So it’s, DUN for Win98 or whatever version you may be using. Maybe if you explained why you wanted to know someone could help. (In the likely event that this has useless to you.)

Gatsby, actually there are different versions of DUN for windows, there are at least 3 versions. To find out what version you are using you have to find a file named C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\rasapi32.dll. Right click on it and select Properties or Quick View. You should find a tab that tells you the version of the file (not DUN). The versions of DUN correspond to the file versions as:

Win98 DUN x.x: version 4.10.1998, 4.10.2000 (Basically same as DUN 1.3)
Win95 DUN 1.3: version 4.10.1903
Win95 DUN 1.2: version 4.10.1537

mine is 4.00.1111
What does that mean?

I’m pretty sure that means that you have the version of DUN 1.3 that shipped with Win95 version B. Microsoft is confusing about these things. Here’s a link:

and another

I also have a version 4.00.1111 of rasapi32.dll. This file has a date/time stamp of 8-24-96 11:11AM. This is the same as most of my system files. I am running version 4.00.950C of Windows 95. This is the version that came from Service Release 2.5, which I don’t think was very popular. I think it added some IE upgrades to SR2 and that was about it.

Anyway, I think it is DUN version 1.2 since it doesn’t seem to have PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) which was part of DUN 1.3. Also DUN 1.3 wasn’t released until 8-17-98 and most of the files are dated 8-14-98.

Thanks, MinkMan for the links. Using them plus some other poking around in MicroSoft’s site, I’m pretty sure the above is accurate. Also, it looks like I can upgrade to DUN 1.3 and get PPTP which I thought I was going to have to upgrade to Windows 98 to get.

Well, I stand corrected. I guess that’s why I put the caveat in. I’m still curious about the reason for the OP…

Go here and get the Winsock version checker proggie:

      http://www.dynamsol.com/puppet/wsver.html

It will tell you which version of Winsock and DUN you have. The site also has some general DUN info.

Good luck.

According to the program that Gammu pointed out, my DUN is version 1.1. More out of date than I thought, time to upgrade it looks like.

Jim

JimB, you can (and should) update win95 to DUN 1.3 and Winsock 2.0. You don’t have to upgrade all the way to Win98 just for that.

The files are MSDUN13.EXE and WS2SETUP.EXE, but I don’t know how hard they are to find for Win95. It’s probably faster to drive to Best Buy and pick up a copy of Win98 than it would be to find on MS’s website.

If you can’t find them, I could probably track them down for you.

yup, mine is 1.1 as well but I’m not fixing it because it’s not broke… What would I gain?

Sailor: The earlier versions of Winsock and DUN are more vunerable to DOS (Denial of Service) attacks. Nukes and stuff can freeze up your whole computer, causing the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). I’m not sure if Evil Hackers can actually damage any data on your system, however.

If you’re having BSOD while online (which suddenly reminds me of another thread), or frequent disconnects, or you spend any time on IRC – where nukes are just part of the fun – you should probably upgrade.

Plus it’s supposed to be faster and more stable (where have I heard THAT one before?). Of course installing anything on Windows can occasionally backfire horribly, so you’re kinda stuck.

Thanks to all of you for the info. As far as why I need it, I do software support. We have a software that requires 1.2 dun or higher. If dun is older then the software does not connect. Thanks again to all of you.
