So why do I need a winsox 2 upgrade and

why can’t they find my required DDL file,WS232-DLL,
Who took it?
How do I get it back?

I don’t know. What are you trying to install? Is this Windows 95? Do you mean Winsock? You can get Winsock2 for Win95 from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winsock/winsock2

Yeah winsock
I’m not trying to install anything. It just tells me I need it.
The pop up says" do you want to install…" with no options and no other way to get rid of the screen.

Well, when it asks you to install, have you tried saying “yes”? When does it ask you anyway? Every time you boot your computer?

Really, it would be easier to answer if you could give much more detail…

Everytime I boot I get a popup that says something like

“You need a winsock 2 upgrade yada yada
Do you want to install…”

It is in the form of a small popup window in the middle of the screen.
I have to say yes to get rid of the popup.
I have windows 95.
After I say yes the screen goes to a blank white screen which has my normal tool bar on top.
Another popup comes up and says I need an internet connection.
When I provide the connection another popup comes up saying it cannot find the required .DDLfile,WS232_DLL,
I click OK or whatever the hell is clickable and it all goes away.2 windows say the same thing so I have to click twice.
Really this is all the information I have.

This Winsock upgrade seems to be what you need.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/w95sockets2/default.asp

Download it, execute the file and reboot.

They provide the upgrade address.
It was when I first went there it started telling me the required DDL file is missing.

I know this probably isn’t the answer you were looking for, but, if at all possible, for the love of god, upgrade your operating system! Windows 95 is a nightmare. Any machine that can run Win95 should also be more than capable of running Windows 98 Second Edition which is far more stable and less troublesome than Win95 is.

I’m not sure I understand correctly, justwanno.

Who’s they and what address are they providing?

Have you tried my link?

Petter

They are whoever decided that I need the upgrade and decided to not provide a “I’m not interested” choice.

Here is the address they provided and I used.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/w95sockets2/default.asp?

No I haven’t had time to try to download the other links. This is a holiday weekend and high school graduatioin weekend.
It is almost a requirement to show up at several grad parties, yawn.
Just not enough time.

thanks for the link though.

Well it appears it is the same link you provided.

Which means that I tell it yes download everytime I turn the damned computer on.

I had to put Ws2 on someone’s laptop as AOL would only work if that was on.If it asks every time your turn the computer on, its probably a setting in the registry.

I’m sorry if I seem stuck in a groove, ** justwannano**, but I want to be absolutely sure I know what steps you’re taking in order to solve the problem.

After rebooting and dismissing the installation popup you’ve described, have you then proceeded to http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wuadmintools/s_wunetworkingtools/w95sockets2/default.asp, followed the instructions there, rebooted and still been prompted to install Winsock 2?

Am I too much of a newbie to complain about handy’s content free drivebys?

Short answer No.

When the message first came up and I answered yes something was downloaded.I then received
the “can’t find the required file” message.

I assume that I have the download. It just can’t find the file to put it in.
Hence my question.
Why do I need the upgrade?
Why can’t they find it?
a little bit of tongue in cheek. Who took it?
Some more tongue in cheek. How do I get it back.
The questions, why can’t they find it and how do I get it back, indirectly asks was it there in the first place.
Also How do I get it back asks, if so what happened to it?

justwannano:

Short reply: Why not?

I don’t care what you assume.

I don’t care why you need the upgrade.

I don’t care why you can’t find it.

I don’t care who took it.

I don’t care how you get it back.

I don’t care why it was there in the first place.

I don’t care what happened to it.

For the love of God, why won’t you read my previous post and do what it says?

“Have you then proceeded” combined with a double post.

I’ve clearly lost all credibility here.

justwannano: Please follow my advice. It’s sound.

Petter, the topic was:

" So why do I need a winsox 2 upgrade and"

& I said that AOL (I forgot the version) required it on a laptop I used. That answers the topic.
