Simpsons Throwaways and Tossoffs

Danke. That’s about the Valjean thing, right?

This was just showing today, and I finally picked up on it after seeing the episode 2-3 times in the past.

Alex, the new girl, was talking about the perfume she was using.

Lisa: “Perfume?”

Alex: “Oh, don’t be such a Phoebe.”
Of course, the voice actress playing Alex was Lisa Kudrow.

I just heard that myself. And I then wondered - was it “Phoebe” or “feebie,” like feeble? Is there a connection to the Friends character in the way Lisa is acting?

Homer finds Henry Kissingers glasses in the toilet and thinking it makes him look smarter says

Homer: The square of the sides of isocoles triangle is equal to the square of the third side.
Voice from Bathroom Stall: That’s a right triangle, you idiot!

Of course, this is in reference to the not so obscure “mistake” (some have argued that it is indeed not a mistake, but intentional) in the Wizard of Oz when the scarecrow finally gets a brain. I think if you didn’t know that then you would just think it was Homer being stupid as usual.

I just love this exchange, in which Homer buys an evil Krusty doll:

Burns: You know Smithers, I believe I’ll donate a million dollars to the local orphanage - when pigs fly!
[Homer’s roast pig goes sailing by window]
Smithers: Will you be donating the million now, sir?
Burns: No, I’d still prefer not.

In the Grade School Confidential episode:

[Skinner comes out of the school and opens his coat, revealing what looks like dynamite strapped to his chest.]

Skinner: I have a bomb!
[crowd is aghast]
[Wiggum looking through binoculars]

Wiggum: Hey, wati a minute! Those are hot dogs! Armor hot dogs.

Chalmers: What kind of man wears Armor hot dogs?

-Henry

Back in a older thread, I would have put this down as my “Favorite Homer smart moment” if I had remembered:

Lisa is disappointed that she cannot tap-dance. Homer suggests she write a play. “You can throw in a lot of swears, like David Mamet does.”

I like the one when they’re walking through Chinatown and pass a store whose sign reads “Toys L Us”

Preceeded by Marge’s advice, “It can be about people coming to terms with things!”

Moe giving advice to Homer.

Moe: Sounds like they need a little face time with good 'ol lady brick.

I just saw the episode today, and I was right. It was the fireworks factory, candy factory, and slide factory.

In the same episode, a lit firework goes into a fireworks factory. One of the residents of Chinatown runs out and yells “Chineese Fire Drill! For real this time!”

Remember that episode (I can’t) featuring a mental institution and where, towards the end you see Chief from One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest tear a drink fountain out of the floor, hurl it threw a nearby window and escape?

There’s a Citizen Kane reference in another episode, but again it slips through the sieve.

Comatoast welcome!

That was the April Fool’s episode where Homer gets injured by Bart’s exploding beer. It was a clip show, but near the end Barney and Moe come to visit Homer and Moe offers Homer a beer. Homer shies away and says “No! Beer bad!”. That’s when Barney says “I can’t stand to see him like this!”, smothers him with the pillow, breaks the window, and runs away.

Moe’s response: “He REALLY needs a girlfriend.”

There’s actually an even better Cuckoo’s Nest joke in “The Old Man and the “C” Student,” where Bart works at the nursing home.

Bart talks to a Native American man who turns out to not be a nursing home resident (he’s passing out flyers for Proposition 217). When he’s done, he throws a water fountain through the window and jumps out. The Crazy Old Man comments “You know, the door was open, Chief Break-everything!” A minute later, after Bart and the seniors are gone, Lisa comes looking for them. Suddenly the fountain flies through the window coming back in. “Forgot my hat,” says the chief. Then he hands Lisaa pamphlet and bolts. Absolutely PRICELESS.

There are any number of Citizen Kane jokes. They love referring to that film, 2001, and anything by Hitchcock (especially Psycho).

In the X-Files take off with Leonard Nimoy where Montgomery Burns is the alien, Homer approaches the sighting location once more and the “Psycho” violin theme starts shrieking in the background.

Just then, the Springfield Symphony bus pulls up with the violin section bowing away at their instruments. Effing priceless!

Also, when Homer first encounters Burns as the alien he goes running out of the forest and into a field of tall grass. His path traces out a crop-circlesque written form of “Yaaaaah!”

To form the period under the exclamation point, Homer has to make a concerted effort, jumping up and over to stamp down the final patch of grass. This cracks me up in a big way every single time I see it.

From that same episode…

Homer runs through the woods and comes upon a billboard that says “DIE” and screams. A few seconds later the wind blows away some tree branches and the sign now says “DIET” and Homer screams even louder!

Backstage at Homerpalooza:

In the episode where Burns has all the plant employees teams up and complete a wilderness challenge,
Lenny: We made it thanks to our team-work.
Carl: Yeah MY teamwork!

Basically anything Lenny or Carl say is a riot.
From the Marge on steroids episode, Homer is recovering from a night of sex with Marge. Bart walks in. Some conversation ensues. Homer limps out of the room saying “Mommy has to shave for the big show today.”
