Single Favorite Beatles Song?

My favorite wavers between “Dear Prudence” “Mother Nature’s Son” and “Rain”.

Yea, but because ‘For No One’ has such a lovely melody, most people don’t notice how darned depressing it is…I don’t think a lot of people even notice the lyrics.

It’s difficult to pick a favourite, but I would go for ‘Across the Universe’. I still think the Beatles are the most overrated band ever and the Byrds are better though

Altough there are quite a few songs very close in the race, I’ll have to say “Across the Universe” is my favorite song.

“For No One” has depressed the hell out of me on several occasions, and has made already depressing days even worse. I once asked my wife if I could change the track on the CD player, and she asked, “Why? It’s a nice song.” I replied, “Jebus, have you ever even listened to the lyrics?” She did, and then changed the track.

Hey! that was going to be my pick.

Controversial, I know, but:

She’s leaving home

“Let It Be”

…with several others close.

“In My Life”.

It’s always been my favourite, and I found it incredibly moving when Radio Sweden closed the Engilsh service with it, no comments, on the day John died.

“woke up, got outa bed…
dragged a comb across my head…”

I heard it last night driving home. I like the big BANG at the end.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

“Something”

‘Paperback Writer’

3 way tie between Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday and A Day in the Life.

oh and i especially like RUN FOR YOUR LIFE

“I’d rather see you dead little girl
than to see you with another man…”

DAMN JOHN, what were you thinking? Catchy melody though. Did OJ listen to this over and over before visiting Nicole that night? hmmm…

Assuming the Abbey Road Medley doesn’t count as one song, I’d go with “Hey, Bulldog.”

He was thinking of Elvis Presley, of course. He “borrowed” those words from a song Elvis recorded, called “Baby Let’s Play House.”

“blackbird”

My boyfriend whips out his gitfiddle and strums it for me when I’m sad.

I’m partial to the non-Pepper psychedelia authored by John, hence a tossup between “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “I Am the Walrus”. “Yer Blues” is a non-psychedelic favorite. At the moment. Tomorrow I may prefer “And Your Bird Can Sing” or something… (but not “Something”…)

I’ll go for “For No One”. Depressing yes, but I love it.

Help

It has a very upbeat happy catch tune, combined with introspective and melancholy lyrics.

“Long Long Long.”

Now * that’s * a depressing Beatles song.

I think you have to divide their oeuvre (whoo…fancy… ) into eras/genres.

Early/British Invasion: Eight Days a Week

Late: Dear Prudence

Psychedelia: I am the Walrus

(although I really like If I Fell, Help, Paperback Writer, We Can Work it Out, Savoy Truffle, Fixing a Hole, Good Morning, Hey Bulldog, Two of Us, Across the Universe and the entire Abbey Road side 2 medley…and the guy who likes She’s Leaving Home must be on crack. )
