Where is Lisa? My guess is that she’s in that ocean she was staring so dreamily at. Anyone else have any other ideas? I had this bad feeling the minute she said she was driving away for a “few hours” without having left a list for Nate. I just don’t think we’re going to see her any more which, of course, leaves the door wide open for Brenda. And that’s probably a good thing.
This was a very weepy episode. But I think some good came from it, especially the Ruth/Claire bonding. Those women are so alike, even thought Claire really doesn’t want to be like her mother. I loved their conversation in Claire’s room.
I’m also glad that David took off! I’m not sure how I feel about Patrick picking him up and taking him home. But maybe Patrick is what David needs right now. He surely doesn’t need Keith!!!
Maybe she ran after getting a taste of freedom? I was thinking, though, she might be getting ready to end it all, as well.
The Brenda/Billy situation is just creepy.
Regarding Arthur, he’s a weirdo… but I sort of hope he sticks around a bit. I find his character pretty interesting. I’m sure most people find him annoying.
Well, I wasn’t surprised to find out about Russell and Olivier! Gah, poor Claire. And now it looks like Russell is going to get very obsessed with her.
Just when I was thinking how “sane” Billy was acting… he goes and does something like that! That relationship has been twisted for a long time, although it should be pointed out that it really was the parent’s doing that made it so twisted.
Gah, it was Patrick that picked up David at the bus station–I thought it was Tim! LOL It looks like David and Keith are headed for bust-up city; I’ll miss seeing Keith, but think that David would definitely be happier with someone like Patrick.
I have no idea what has happened to Lisa! She was either in an accident, or else … well, committed suicide. That’s what I’d been forseeing, at least.
Was really glad to see the bonding between Ruth and Claire, great scenes. Poor Arthur, though! I know he’s weird, and admittedly gave me the creeps at first (LOL I thought maybe he’d been the one that set the fire that killed his parents!), but he’s kinda grown on me.
Looks like the final three episodes of this season are really going to rock! And I’m looking forward to seeing them.
That Brenda’s one hot brotherfucker. That’s probably the first time she’s stayed at a seedy motel without nailing a complete stranger. She’s still my girl though.
So what’s the rule? You can move on once your wife is missing for seven years? Or three episodes? I know I get abuse for this idea, but Lisa’s gone, Maya’s doing well and Brenda still wants Nate. I don’t see a downside here. I hope Lisa sleeps with the fishes. I can see her there now, trying to convince tiger sharks to switch to kelp. I know, I’m a bad person.
You know, I blame the movie industry in general for perpetuating the notion that showing up at and refusing to leave your ex’s house, weepy-eyed and penitent, begging for a second chance, and assuring her that things will be different is not only acceptable, but romantic. I’m glad for Claire’s sake, and mine too, that she turned him away. More people need to realize that’s creepy. I’m sure she’ll be receiving a severed ear via UPS sometime soon though. Her Not Gay ex seemed to be a little too into Van Gogh.
After the whole Billy/Brenda creep fest, I’m just glad Claire and Ruth didn’t start making out. They really did cast those parts well.
I was hoping there would be more interaction with Taylor and David. Those two had a great chemistry. Would have been a nice Mother and Daughter Reunion thing.
Mrs. Rico seems much better… but at what price? Hell, if I was a nurse I’d probably be treating the medicine cabinet like a Whitman’s Sampler, too. It’s also nice to see Rico not being a prick.
Any thoughts on why Nate seemed profoundly affected by the grieving widower at the beginning? I mean Nate’s not nearly the bad husband that guy claimed to be.
This episode depressed the hell out of me which shows what a great job they do. I predict that Lisa will be heavily featured in the first five minutes of the next episode.
Alphagene: I think showing Nate affected is simply showing what happens from time to time to funeral directors when hearing the stories people come in with. I’d like to think that it didn’t really have anything to do with the episode just some more character building :D.

Interesting episode, I can definetly see Russell doing some wierd stuff. Claire is SO going to have a loud argument with Olivier about this.
Poor Arthur :(. He’s been one of my favorites since he’s arrived. Oh well… we’ll see what develops from this.
Lisa has gotta be in the ocean or in an accident. Brenda will probably drift back into Nate’s life. It’d be interesting to see her try to act the mother part :D.
Claire & Russell - Anyone recall Russell’s comments about Van Gogh cutting off his ear? Get ready for an ear-ful of romantic gestures…
As much as I dislike Claire, and that is a LOT, I was finally glad to see her acting like something other than a whiny, self-obsessed child by standing up for herself and not taking Russell’s behavior. It’s about damn time.
Ruth & Arthur - I hope this is a delicate way of ending the storyline involving these two. I like Arthur, great character with fantastic quirks and mannerisms. I love Ruth, the most “real” character on the show in my opinion. Putting these two together just degraded the character they built up in Ruth.
David & Keith - See ya’ dick-head. David is a sucking hole of need but damn Keith is a prick.
Brenda & Billy - Anyone not see this coming in oh… the first season??? I’m glad the “Crazy Billy” is coming back though but I hope they find a way to make it fresh and not feel like the same ol’ same ol’ with Billy.
Brenda & Nate - Great scene, until they kissed. C’mon… cliche 101 anybody? Oh well, when these two finally do get back together it’ll be some pretty hot/wild/nasty boinking.
Brenda & Lisa - Who ELSE do you think is at the motel with Brenda? Duh! They’ve not had a lesbian yet on the show, it is about time!
Lisa - Personally, I don’t think she is dead. That is too obvious and straight forward which is the exact opposite of what this show tends to deliver.
I for one am proud of Brenda for pulling away from Nate and not sleeping with him. She’s grown as a person because the old her wouldn’t have thought of the consequences.
Nate is gonna feel SO guilty - his wife is MIA (or dead) and he’s kissing an old girlfriend.
And I sort of feel guilty about this whole Lisa development. I hated her and wished she was gone, then she starts to become a more likable person and whoosh! she seems to be gone. I feel like my wish came true, but I didn’t want it anymore.
Well, in last week’s thread I mentioned something about Russell and Olivier, and how disappointed I was that, yet again, the offbeat guy turns out to be sexually confused. It’s becoming a contemporary cultural cliche that I thought the the producers of SFU would rise above. It’s that whole “weird=gay” thing that’s been discussed on these boards before. I’m not saying that I didn’t think Russell was somehow odd, right out of the gate. But I thought it would turn out to be a different kind of oddness.
All I can say is, wherever Lisa is, I think she’s gone for good. The opening credits still say she’s guesting, so I don’t expect her to be here for the whole season.
First off, am I the only one that thought - only 3 more episodes?? WTF? Are we going to have to wait another freakin’ year for more episodes? Was last season this short?
Ok, that said, I enjoyed this episode. I don’t think Lisa is headed for “First five minutes” status just yet. I am still wondering if something is going to happen regarding the first episode of the season. Nate’s death/revival coma/dream whatever the heck it was thing. If it does, I’ll bet it involves her.
In the minority here, but I am also thinking Lisa is not so much whacked, but very insecure. After seeing and talking to Brenda, she was better (at least I thought so…guess we’ll see about that, too!)
Also last week, I wonder how key it was that Brenda told Lisa something to the effect of ‘he didn’t love me, he only wanted what he couldn’t have’, Lisa turns around and gives Nate the out, and he does not take it.
David and Keith are a meltdown waiting to happen. Gonna be interesting.
I’m with th OP, loved the Claire/Ruth bonding scene. I liked that Claire has come to see her mother as a person, rather than just annoying mom.
Nate and Brenda NOT going down that road? Surprising, but good, I think. Still curious about how that will play out.
I got the sense Nate was so upset because he realized he’d never have that depth of feeling for Lisa, as much as he says he loves her and Maya. Nate’s not happy in his marriage, and IMO is trying to do what he can to salvage it but his heart just isn’t in it. All this can and probably will change with the next episode. I don’t know if I’ll ever figure out why Nate is so not-Nate this season. It’s not just that he had a brain tumor and almost died, but something about the way he’s been written feels very dreamlike and just shy of real.
The scenes between Claire and Ruth were incredible. As much as I like the bitter, sarcastic Claire it’s nice to see her vulnerable, open, and wistful, talking about how she misses her father and can’t find any normal guys to date.
I don’t really know what to say about Brenda and Billy, except I saw the kiss coming a mile away and was still shaken. The Chenowith kids were really just like experiments for their parents, weren’t they? But as crazy as Billy is, I could wholeheartedly agree with his rage at the cartoon travesty of Nathaniel and Isabel. I’ve felt that way about a number of adaptations before. Does Billy’s house weird anyone else out? The spatial dimensions seem very off to me; that door from the living room (well, the archway) seemed very small in comparison with everything else. I can’t get a feel for what the space looks like at all.
I have hypothesized to friends that the season opening death of Nate scene has continued throughout this season and thereby he is still on the operating table. As a matter of fact, I was quite convinced after the first episode that what we saw was not in fact reality but just another alternative. Since then, I’ve been less convinced of the possibility but… there keeps being small things that pop up that make me really wonder again.
If Patrick Duffy does a Man from Atlantas into a shower stall in Dallas I’m going to be really pissed.
“Final three episodes”…I was afraid that means they’re going to wrap up the series. It sure sounded like it, the way they said the last three will change everything.
If I’m not mistaken, each season has been 13 episodes. I think that’s about standard for HBO series. And I guess that would mean we’re going to have to wait another freakin’ year for more episodes. I can’t imagine HBO would end it at this point. I don’t see the Fischer family living “happily ever after.”
Most HBO series are indeed 13 episodes. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is only 10, but that show is a lot harder to do (even though it’s just 30 minutes) because it’s unscripted.
The scene between Clare and Ruth was right on target I thought. I remember when I first realized that my mom was a person and not just the lady who was in charge. It’s a good thing to discover and now that she’s dead, I really miss that the most.
I have no firm cite for this but I believe I saw Alan Ball say something (probably on The Buzz) about being in negotiation for at the very least another season of SFU.
Glad to see Lisa go…and hopefully forever, but my guess is she will remain missing until the appropriate, inappropriate moment.
Keith and David are probably just not meant to be - but they seem to want to drag this out forever. Sorry, but a guy like Keith, ex-cop and no-nonsense type of guy would never hang around a wimpering snivel like David for long “I’m just opening up my feelings to you, (sniff sniff), and you’re a big meanie weenie…”.
David needs to get a backbone fast, or he’s history.
All in all, another excellent episode - although recently I found myself in the position of trying to explain 6FU to someone who had never seen the show and after a minute they said, “wow, that sounds depressingly awful.”
