I also go with Trump, by far the least delusional of the three. Slate’s Saletan writes “it probably wouldn’t take more than five minutes to persuade Carson he’s mistaken [about the Pyramids and other crazy things] … [he] is willing to learn.” This seems a bizarre claim: if the man could learn in 5 minutes, why hasn’t he?
I’d prefer Trump even to Rubio. Trump would be his own man and might surprise us favorably, but Rubio would be a puppet to the Kochs and neocons.
Of course I’d prefer a competent President: any of the Democrats or even one of the other GOP frontrunners.
These three (plus Fiorina) are the worst the GOP has to offer. That said . . .
Trump is a mad man, who could easily start WWIII.
Cruz is disqualified, based on his “philosophers<welders” comment.
Carson is irrational and delusional.
Trump. At least we’ll all go out with a bang, not a whimper.
I pick Trump. Building a wall along the Mexican border and halting Islamic immigration are the two best policy proposals I’ve ever heard from any Presidential candidate in my lifetime.
If we lose America to a stupid goon of a candidate these next four years, then we’re playing for what comes after, and for how the rest of the systems of state and the rest of human race outside the USA responds.
So, this is terrible, but probably Trump.
Cruz actually scares me. Carson is a bag of air.
Trump, on the other hand, has a long, long record of being a ridiculous piece of celebrity-obsessed trash. The rest of the world should be able to pretty quickly twig to the fact that his election means Yanks are dumber than soup. It might take longer for it to sink in with a newer face.
So, put Trump in, make it clear that the US electorate is in fact dumber than soup, and let the rest of the world get used to opposing us instinctively.
Trump = Reagan. Both performers. Ron got some experience running California so wasn’t a total shitbag. (Don’t nitpick - he was a terrible president in many ways). He also got along with Tip O’Neil and made things work with compromise/negotiation. Trump’s experience is in business negotiations, not totally dissimilar for working with others.
The pre-election bombast is showtime. Get noticed, get in the news, get publicity. I could see him working across party lines and with other world leaders after feeding the party faithful raw meat.
Not insane as posited above.
Carson is simply out of his depth, closed-minded, poorly informed. In a tight focus like surgery, he might have excelled. His world view and even his personal recollection of the past are woeful.
Cruz is single-minded and evil. “My way or the highway.” His proposals are a direct assault on the US Constitutional rights, our judicial system, and history.
The evangelical community is behind Cruz. Carson has fallen out of the spotlight, and Trump has alienated them so much that people will drop Facebook friends over him: one of my friends is whining about it. (The same one who is both anti-Duggar, moderated on SSM [doens’t like it but is happy for gay people] and anti-Muslim because she married a former Muslim.)
As for Trump, I don’t agree at all. I don’t think he knows how to wheel and deal, or he wouldn’t be going out of his way to burn bridges all over the place. He’s a businessman, sure, but he’s gotten where he is by being the biggest jerk in the room at any given point. His winning strategy is always to go big, and mitigate risk only as much as it directly affects him.
And if he’s just going for show, he sure has a lot of people fooled, as nearly everyone who knows him personally have said that this is his real personality.
I’m not a fan of Carson or Cruz, but I am not afraid they will cause World War III because they refuse to back down from Putin. The one thing Trump can’t stand is to have someone say he’s weak.
We don’t need a president where “Cheep cheep cheep” is a valid negotiating strategy. Carson would be my vote. He’s crazy, but he’s crazy in a way we know how to manipulate. He can’t put anyone stupider than him in his administration, and they will be able to steer him.
It’s not ideal, but it’s better than the alternatives.
If those are the choices, then I would go for Carson as Fretful Porpentine points out.
I have seen this idea many times in other treads and I have to say that this is too optimistic. We are not dealing with the Republican party of a generation ago, we have a party that will demand more than just raw meat, as Bohener found out. If elected I think that the very same moment Trump appears to be working across party lines the impeachment will begin as they will see any moves across party lines as a betrayal.
The insanity will have to be kept, and what I foresee is a lot of insane legislation that Trump will sign that will be very harmful to the future.
I would easily prefer Ted Cruz over Donald Trump or Ben Carson. Cruz pros:
[ul]
[li]Strong record of supporting lower taxes and less federal economic regulations[/li][li]Has fought hard against handouts to corporations, such as the Ex-Im Bank and the ethanol mandate.[/li][li]Supporter of freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech.[/li][li]Very knowledgeable about constitutional law.[/li][/ul]
Cruz cons:
[ul]
[li]Militantly anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage.[/li][li]Grandstands on anti-immigrant stance.[/li][li]Favors ever larger, more interventionist military.[/li][li]Bad stances on privacy and freedom from government spying.[/li][/ul]
Cruz has principles. I like some of his principles and dislike some of his principles, but at least he has them. Donald Trump has no principles, and there’s no predicting what he would do in any situation. As President, he might fling forth all kinds of bad ideas on top of the ones he’s already put forward. As for Carson, I haven’t paid much attention to him, and he seems,to be sinking towards irrelevancy anyway.
For the record, I won’t vote for any Republican in the primary or the general, but if I had to choose a Republican candidate I’d pick Chris Christie.
