If you ignore the form factor and the reddish color, I suspect many hotdogs are pretty much chicken paste / chicken emulsion. Just with very chicken-inappropriate flavorings added.
Hear! Hear! I don’t fry foods very often because I don’t want to clean up the mess, but I can’t think of any recipe for fried chicken, chicken fried steak, etc., etc. where I used sugar. I don’t even use sugar when I make cornbread.
I’m not Southern, but if I did see a recipe with sugar in the coating, I would assume it’s there more to help with the color/browning of the chicken than for actual sweetness. But that is usually played by the role of paprika which, besides its own red color, has a high-ish sugar content that leads to better browning. (Though it also will burn more easily.)
I remember back in the 1990s when KFC was trying to get away from just fried foods and add more “healthy” items to their menu they had rotisserie chicken on their menu for a while. But I’m sure they removed that from the menu long ago.
I wonder if the reason there are fewer fast food chains selling roast or grilled chicken is because they have to compete with the rotisserie chickens they sell at the grocery store. Come to think of it, if you don’t want a whole chicken I wonder if they sell just a leg / thigh at the deli counter at some grocery stores. I sometimes run into Safeway on the way home from work to grab a roast chicken for dinner, but I’ve never checked out what hot foods they offer at the deli counter. But it might be worth checking out.
Most all our grocery stores that sell rotisserie whole chickens also sell individual pieces, or pre-packed boxes of same, in either fried or rotisseried form. The intact rotisserie birds are usually available in a couple of different seasonings as are the cut-up pieces.
I’m not in your area, but I bet if you look in enough local stores you’ll find one so equipped.
I remember that show. Great 1970s odd couple style police detective show. Set in a rural area in Kansas IIRC. Always chasing livestock nappers or game poachers or grain thieves.
Most commercial coatings for sale probably have a bunch of sugars added.
Don’t blame it all on southerners.
People are addicted to sugar. Food manufacturers know it. Fast food joints know it. Soda makers know it.
As a diabetic, I look. Its very hard to find things that are not an abundance of sugars added.
I much prefer an added teaspoon at home than an unknowable amount of HFCS from fast food.
There was a Slim Chickens in New Jersey a few years ago. It lasted a couple of months. I grabbed a quick meal there a couple of times to give it a shot. It was just OK. I much prefer Popeyes or KFC. I decided to never go back after going in and basically being ignored. It seemed like there was just a bunch of teenagers with absolutely no supervision. It probably didn’t help that they were very close to a Chick-fil-a.
You can read the original story online, but it does have some problematic language. I learned about the story from my dad, when I wanted to get a guinea pig. Wheek wheek!
I’ve never seen a Slim Chickens, but now if I get a chance I’ll check it out. Raising Cane’s is okay, but their Texas toast is not all it should be. The quality of Popeye’s is going down, so I might not be eating there in the future. We do have a good local chicken & biscuit place (Rise). Hopefully they won’t be affected too much by bird flu. I’m a little worried about what that’s going to do to chicken-centric food places.
I had a Disney book of stories, and that was one of them. Which means I’m not surprised at problematic language. It did have some stories from Song of the South, after all.
To be clear, I have nothing against what they say they are. They say they just do chicken fingers, and that’s what they do. And even if they raved about how amazing they are, well, that’s just advertising.
I just get annoyed by how the general public seems to rave about them. They’re just not that great. And they’re extremely expensive, as fast food goes.
