Small text that is chunky and that is barely readable

I don’t know what is wrong with my computer or any of it’s settings. But on certain web pages where some of the text appears smaller than normal text, the smaller text has a low-definition to it, which makes it’s appearance a bit chunky and barely readable or unreadable. Does anyone know what is wrong? I’ll probably end up Restoring my computer anyhow. It is pretty damn annoying thought.

It’s only on certain pages?

What browser do you use? If you’re using Internet Explorer, click View|Text Size and see what it’s set at. Sometimes through a particular combination of keys you can enlarge or reduce text size (I’ve done this accidentally a few times).

That sounds suspiciously like the Small Fonts font. At point size 8 and above it looks very chunky.

You can also check what default font your browser is set to. Go to Tools/Internet Options and on the first tab, select the Fonts button. The default is Times New Roman and Courier New for plain text pages.

A lot of people accidently change their default text size if they have a mouse with a scroll wheel. Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the wheel to see some wierd sizing effects.

Internet Explorer under XP? iCab under OS X? Mozilla on Red Hat? Netscape on ME? Opera on 9.2? AWeb on AmigaOS 3.9, perhaps?

If you’re in MacOS X, try unchecking font antialiasing for small font sizes. You may also benefit from toggling the setting that renders your display at PC standard 96 dpi instead of Mac standard 72 dpi, as lots of web pages are designed on a PC and never checked on a Mac for legibility.
