Smallville [meteor] Rocks!

So you’d think I would’ve learned my lesson from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” but I still dismissed “Smallville” completely without watching it, just because I thought it looked too teen-oriented. Finally, after a friend’s recommendation I set my new best friend Tivo to record a few episodes, and now I’m hooked. And just like I was for Buffy season 1, I’m desperately trying to get caught up.

Who would’ve guessed that they could get so much mileage out of the Kryptonite angle, and even more surprising, that it would’ve worked so well? When the show was first coming out, was it well-advertised that David Nutter (from “The X-Files”) was involved? I didn’t have any idea; I was expecting “Dawson’s Creek” and “Lois & Clark” instead of “The X-Files.”

Plus, from the publicity stills I thought that the kid they have playing Superboy was just way too pretty. I still do, but the kid they have playing Lana Lang is just pretty enough (yowza! i’m a lecherous old man), so she makes up for it.

Any other late comers to the show, or still-closeted fans? Any guesses as to what happens next season?

And speaking of “closeted,” a friend pointed out the weird sexual tension between Clark & Lex, and I didn’t believe a bit of it. But now that she brought it up, it’s all I can see, kind of uncomfortably obvious. And I don’t like it one bit. Not because it’s gay, but because it’s Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. That’s just not right!

I used to watch Smallville, but I sort of lost steam after I got hooked on “Frasier” which comes on the same night…my Tuesdays are booked. But I’ve seen a few episodes, and it’s pretty good. Missed season finale, though. IMHO, Clark is pretty sexy. Lex too.

About the sexual tension…looking back, yeah, I can see it. It’s more like Lex is setting his sights on the little guy (speaking of…since when have high school freshmen looked this good? :)), and Clark is just sort of caught up in it. He does manage to come over to Lex’s house at odd times any time he wants, and Lex pushing the truck on him was pretty obsessive. Hehe…I have a twisted mind.

It has just started here. From the previous post it would seem that every turning point of each episode still involves a vehicular accident. There were 6 in the first 3 episodes. I can feel my interest waning, waning, waning…or is it the kryptonite in my pocket?

I watched the first six episodes, but there was a little too
much emphasis on “Freak of the Week” stuff.

I liked the characters a lot. It ended here recently,
and I’m glad to say that they had the balls to end
the series on a Cliffhanger, nice one.

I am looking forward to the next series.

I’ve been enjoying it…when I catch 'em. Every so often we watch an episode on Tark’s computer (cough). I thought it was cute that Annette O’Toole is playing Ma Kent, since she was Lana Lang in “Superman III,” and I almost fell out of my chair when I realized that Pa Kent was Bo Duke. I think they’re doing an excellent job overall.

And feel free to lust over Lana Lang…that actress is (IIRC) 24 years old.

I’m almost embarrassed to admit it but I like Smallville. It’s fun and like Buffy they include jokes and allusions to things that have nothing to do with the plot. I started laughing the other night when I realized that as John Kent was driving his old red pick up truck in the opening scene of Tuesday’s episode, the Dukes of Hazard Theme was playing on the radio.

I’m rather taken with Cloie (Alison Mack). Lana is too pretty to be real. I prefer women with a bit more fire anyway (even if their fictional). My wife is hot for Lex.

Yup, I agree. Alison Mack is the shiznit. It sucks I’m too lazy to be a stalker, she’d be a good project.

The freak of the week stuff got old real quick, but I held the belief that it would be gradually faded out as the show progressed. Fortunately, they did just that.

Chalk up another Cloe fan. She’s absolutely perfect. However, credit must be given to Lana’s “I’ve inhaled evil pollen, and must strip out of these clothes and jump in the pool in my skivvies” performance. Bravo!

I’m another semi-smallville fan. We usually switch to it after Buffy on Tuesdays, at least that was when it was on this last season…

Lex is a babe, but then I’ve always had a thing for bald men after Captain Picard. My current man isn’t bald yet, but I keep hoping that he has bald potential.

The story lines have been rather ‘freak of the week’ I agree, but I liked the main characters (Cloe especially) so much that it didn’t bother me.

I love the way that Michael Rosenbaum plays Lex.
I’m also a very, very, very, very happy with the sexual tension between Lex and clark. That sort of thing makes Gravs very happy.

There are 21 episodes in the first season. There’s only one that I can’t stand (#16 - Stray) and quite a few that I just love to bits.

Count me in as another fan (and Chloe lover). I think the show has finally found its nitch after that string of “freak of the week” episodes, and I hope the Kryptonite meteors are downplayed even more in the future.

Two things I’m dying for in the show:

  1. That Bruce Wayne appearance. C’mon, with the Batman vs. Superman movie announced, this would be a perfect tie-in.
  2. A young Lois Lane cameo (PLEASE don’t tell me they already had one). You know, some nice scene where Clark is in Metropolis, moaning about not having a girlfriend, and he walks of camera…just missing Lois, who is similarly moaning about not having a boyfriend. It’d add a level of comfort to the “Clark can never be with Lana” theme.

If by 24, you mean 19, then you’re absolutely correct.

Well, I can’t remember where, but I read somewhere on the web that Clark was supposed to meet Chloe’s Metropolis cousin at some point, and that the cousin would be Lois Lane. It didn’t happen in the first season, but Chloe did go off to Metropolis for an internship and did say she would be staying with a cousin, so maybe they are setting up the situation for season two.

Regarding young Bruce Wayne, that has possibilities, story-wise. Maybe, if and when Lex starts to live up to his adult reputation, he will run into competition from a certain young Gotham businessman. I can understand why the producers would want to avoid all the lengthy backstory they would have to supply for many of the DC superheroes, but Batman’s is very simple, and very well-known.

I’ve been wanting to give this show a try since I first heard about it. But I didn’t have a WB affiliate on my cable system…until today! Yay! And I can finally watch Gilmore Girls again.

I think Chloe is cute enough, and I do think the show is fun, but I get tired of the kryptonite being the cause of nearly every problem in that town (teen acne would probably clear up if the little green rocks would hitch a ride to Metropolis), and I raise my eyebrows every time they cover up weak writing by having Chloe “find” some important, missing information on the internet, or how she “gained access” to a government database. I think they see the magic stones and Chloe’s journalistic interests as crutches for when they can’t think of anything else to throw into the big bowl of plot mix.

Of course, none of the above stops me from watching it when it’s on.

Admittedly they can’t be as openly campy as Buffy is, but I think they can take a hint from Buffy’s writers in both character development and plot continuity. And for God’s sake, write Annette O’Toole some better lines; that poor woman does little else than get victimized by evil villains (sometimes bugs) or nod sympathetically when the Hazardous Duke says something fatherly.

Oh, and Lana’s aunt…could she show up more? Not speak, mind you, just show up and move around a bit. There, there. Now I may need a moment alone.

You know, given the lack of exposure Lana’s aunt has been getting, I could’ve sworn they wrote her off the show. Are you sure they didn’t send her off to Metropolis?

And let me add another question. Where exactly is Metropolis? Because if I’m not mistaken, Smallville is in Kansas, and yet travel between the two cities seems as casual as going one town over.

You can also see Metropolis from the tallest object in Smallville (a windmill).

To the best of my knowledge, Metropolis in the DC Universe is supposed to be somewhere in New York, not terribly far from Manhattan. (Maybe it’s in Delaware, I forget.) It’s definetly a Northeast city, I can tell you that.

Now, on the show…I guess they moved it out west for plot purposes. Well, that’s the nice thing about fictional towns.
