Smith (9/26)

I missed the first half, so a lot seemed to have transpired. Anyone want to fill me in? Specifically…

(1) Hope (hottie Virginia Madsen) had a list of telephone numbers she was calling (and concealing). What were those numbers? I couldn’t make sense from the brief conversations what that was about.

(2) Hope is watching TV with Bobby (Ray Liotta) and some mention of the museum crime comes up, and she asks something like “Anyone we know?” Later, he says something about how they’re going to be OK or some such. Is she aware of a criminal past for him, but she’s assuming he’s gone straight? Were there any clues early in the episode to further fuel her suspicion that he was somehow involved?

(3) Annie (Amy Smart) sets up the theft of the data hard drives, but it appeared that Jeff (Simon Baker) and…the other guy were assigned very specific drives to steal. Was this related with her attempts to cover her tracks/further hide her identity? It assumed this to be the case, but when she brings the drives to the geek squad at the end, it appeared she simply wanted to go looting.

(4) Last week’s preview intimated that the woman Annie tazered (who recognized her from school or something) reported her suspicion. I saw the Feds interview Annie’s parents, but did anything else develop in this thread? Is Bobby aware of anything amiss?

I’m still not completely sold on the show, but I’m enjoying what I’ve seen so far and didn’t want to miss anything. Thanks!

only able to catch a bit of it (enough for a Simon Baker fix…) so I hope someone else pops in. I too like this show but my the lead characters are all bad, bad, bad.

I think she was contacting his associates to see if anyone was killed in the art theft.

I think so. She is on probation, I believe.

I think she was just selling identity theft info.

The cops interviewed Annie’s parents. They say they don’t know where she is, but her Father called her cell phone. She tossed it off a bridge w/o answering. Bobby is not aware that she was identified. He asks them, “Is there anything else I should know?” and the camera hlds on her while she says nothing.

  1. She was calling up the wives of Bobby’s friends, trying to figure out which one of them was missing/had died.

  2. The show hasn’t specifically mentioned it, but I’ve read a number of articles about the show where it stated that their situation was similar to Tony & Carmella on the Sopranos, where she knows, but is in denial about it, and they never discuss it.

  3. Since they had 3 minutes to get in and out before the police arrived, she didn’t want them grabbing anything more than they had to. The geek squad was there to assist her in using the data for identity theft purposes.

  4. I don’t watch previews, so I didn’t read far enough to answer.

Smith is definately in my top 3 favorite shows of the new season. It seems many people are turned off by the idea of generally bad guys being the protaganists, as opposed to the “cool but harmless” thieves that were in last year’s Heist and movies like Ocean’s 11, but that’s exactly what I find interesting and unique about this show. Showtime’s Dexter, a show where the protaganist is a SERIAL KILLER, is going to take this to an even bigger extreme.

Perhaps inspired by FX’s Thief.
I dislike cop shows, but I really like this genre.

Actually that’s not quite right, She picked it up when her father called. Said “Uh huh” and hung up. He hangs up and her mother comes by. She is curious about who he called so she hits redial. Annie, sees the number and somehow knows it’s not her father again(?) throws it off the bridge like she’s standing on the moon(??)
But she’s pretty so I’m not worried about those logical issues.

I think Hope and Bobby are the gone straight type. She’s on probation for drug related stuff (first episode she visited her parole officer and even had to take a drug test). She obviously knows that some of their friends are/were involved in criminal activities. So I surmise that they were previously involved in the crime world together, and she’s under the impression that they no longer do that.

So far I like the show, although hawaiian sniper dude is pretty ruthless. I actually hope something bad happens to him. Even though those surfer guys probably deserved it, it just seemed way over the top as a response, which puts him in the category of homicidal maniac. Everyone else seems to want to avoid killing unless they have to; the guard’s death was mostly Shawn’s fault, which got him killed in return.

Hijack-
I’m curious enough to consider getting showtime for this show. I heard a radio spot for it today that seems to imply that he helps the cops investigate the crime but if he finds the killer before the cops do he kills the killer. I’m not sure if that’s the actual case though.

I was amused by how Smith wants them to keep a low profile but they meet up in a very public monument dressed in the flashiest of conservative suits and are clearly up to something, and then drive away in a fleet of flashy conservative cars.

But Simon Baker was as beautiful as usual (and takes off his shirt) so I was happy.

I think Bobby is suspicious of Annie, but currently he has no idea that the Feds have already narrowed in on Annie. Not quite sure how he knows something isn’t quite right, but when they met at the beginning of the episode to split the proceeds, he gave Annie an extra chance to tell him that the operation might have been compromised. My only guess as to how he can be suspicious is because he knows something caused Annie to miss her cue at the start of the operation.

The interaction between Bobby and Hope is interesting. It seems to me that the dynamic is that Hope is absolutely sure than Bobby is pulling off major heists but she has no proof and she dares not let Bobby know her suspicions. Hopefully we’ll get some flashbacks in future episodes to see if they used to pull heists together in the past or not.

Thanks everyone. Probably the biggest surprise is that there wasn’t any indication in the pilot that Hope was even remotely aware of a criminal past for Bobby (and I saw her probation as a completely separate item; does he know about that? I assume he would but who knows?). We knew she was suspicious of the “business trips” but now it seems she has specific reason to believe he may not have moved on with his life the way he’d like her to think he has. Interesting.

Of course, we haven’t even mentioned Charlie (Shohreh Aghdashloo) and whether Hope knows anything about her criminal relationship to Bobby (though I’m assuming Hope knows he got his paper cup job through her; maybe not).

Thanks for the correction, Flightless.
