For Purdue alum: the last location of Smitty’s grocery store has gone out. This is a major cultural loss to the community; I haven’t the foggiest idea where to get marzipan now.
For non-Purdue-alum: Smitty’s was a shabby old grocery that sold wretched meat and produce, but had the best selection of import items in town. Perhaps it went under because the large chain stores are beginning to carry things like Colman’s mustard and golden syrup.
Wow,
I saw the title and said “nah, they can’t be talking about that Smitty’s”. But you were. How sad, I worked at one of the locations for a week before I realized I couldn’t handle vacuuming that nasty carpet every night.
Next thing you will tell me that they knocked down T.A. Toms.
Is this related to the Smitty’s chain of supermarkets that I used to shop at in Phoenix, Az, in the 80s? It was big modern supermarket, not some shabby little store.
