I’ll smoke something just about every other week or so; I do not smoke fish. Fish I do on cedar over real open coals in a pit. No real secret other than basting with coffee at the very beginning almost no matter what the meat is.
The Doc called and my urine came back blood free and my blood urine free ------- so I guess I’m going to live. Liver function is off a little but considering the meds I’m on and the OTC crap right now I would be more worried if it wasn’t.
As for brining - me no like! My mom brined a turkey one year. OMG, was that sucker salty!! I have a really good rub that I use on ribs and chicken whether I smoke them or roast them in the oven, or rotiss them.
Poke has been pulled and it’s in the fridge for a future meal - probably on Thurs. I think I’ll do meatloaf on Weds, and tomorrow, since daughter and SIL won’t be here, I’ll make fish. Meanwhile, it’s time to do the dishes.
Blurf. Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I did a metric butt ton of laundry. I have played with the pup.
Me and hubs did errands. I dropped him off at the drugstore to get meds while I went and filled the car with gas then we went together to the grocery store. Got home and dropped the bag containing a half gallon of milk. It sprung a leak, made a mess. Cleaned that up and poured the rest of the milk into the almost empty jug we already had. Supper will be fend for yourself or sandwiches.
I need to do a little mending of almost new dog toys that pup managed to tear holes in. And his bed has a big hole plus stuffing all over. I don’t expect the repairs to last.
Don’t you just hate that. I hate deer season! I don’t have free roaming dogs anymore. We had an Aussie that found everyones discarded deer heads, feet, tails, hides, & guts. I hate deer season! People shouldn’t dump their leavings allover the back roads. It’s hard enough keeping roadkill cleaned up.
I hate deer season.
We suspect Ava may not be with us much longer. We’ve noticed she’s having some balance trouble and is a little lighter and weaker than normal. She’s eating and drinking, so that’s a plus, but she’s at least 17 now, which is getting up there for a domestic ringneck dove.
I normally don’t say when I make donations, but I’ll tell this time because I think it’s a good cause. I’ve sent a hectobuck to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Howdy Y’all! Home from the predicted marathon Vestry meetin’. Actually been home bout half an hour. ‘Tis gearin’ up for the annual pledge campaign time, so that was a big reason for a looooooooooong meetin’. Anywho, we survived. The rain has yet to show up but TWPTB still say it’s comin’. :dubious:
St. Jude’s makes me cry alla time. I give them my spare dollars to buy hair for those poor little bald children. (Or whatever they need.)
As per smoking, I went to visit my crazy uncle at the nursing home today, and took him a couple of packs of cigarettes. Obviously, not the best for his physical health. But he’s 81, with late stage dementia, and he has a cigarette when he remembers that he wants one. At this stage, it really doesn’t matter. He’s loony, and he’s my uncle (ish, he’s actually my mom’s first cousin, but my grandparents raised him,) and it will be a race for cause of death if he develops cancer. But he’s doing very well, and his caregivers are kind, and I’m okay with ensuring that he has a cigarette 2-3 times per week if he wants it.
Meanwhile, my mom’s eyes have been opened now that she had to arrange care for my uncle. Mama has drawn up all of the paperwork for medical and legal power of attorney in the past month, and my stepdad has done the same. My brother is first on Ma’s list of decision makers and I’m secondary. My stepdad has me as primary and his son/my stepbrother is secondary. And we’re meeting at the bank tomorrow to add me as a signatory on accounts for Ma, Stepdad, and Uncle.
Just in case.
I’m so relieved. Arranging care for my uncle has been an absolute shit show. I don’t want to deal with that again if something were to happen to my mom or stepdad.
Meanwhile, I have a date with a cute redheaded college freshman tomorrow night. It’s easy to connect with one’s teenagers if you offer to buy dinner at a restaurant she can’t easily afford! The college senior boy is meeting us for dessert, too, so tomorrow is a good day!
Today I cold smoked some cheese, hot peppers for hot sauce, dog biscuits, and sugar. Can anybody beat that combo?
Using my regular wood smoker, but with pellets inside a metal tube with holes all over (https://amazenproducts.com/). Works great, the 6 inch version smokes tons for about 3 hours. Kind of expensive, but pays for itself after smoking a few blocks of cheddar.
Oh, and then I grilled some steak tips. Nice day just poking around the house and yard getting ready for winter.
Smokin’ in the MMP has an entirely different meaning here. I stupidly thought I was turning on the front left burner of the stove when I was actually turning on the rear left burner. Then, still in a hurry, I didn’t realize I’d knocked the plastic lid from the butter container onto said burner as I turned away. I realized my error just as the lid became a puddle and smoke was a-risin’. I turned off the burner while simultaneously slamming the pot lid over the plastic puddle. Then I hit the exhaust fan and ran around opening windows.
Fortunately, no smoke detector racket. I live in an apartment building. The smoke detectors here are extremely loud and are accompanied by a woman’s voice intoning “fire” like she’s very bored but thinks you’re too stupid to know what that ear-splitting alarm is for. Since there was an actual fire in the building a couple years ago (Not me, I swear.) that gutted an apartment, I would hate to be the one to panic the neighbors. (Nobody was hurt back then, and the wonderful firefighters rescued the resident kitten.)
Now I just have to worry about how to get melted plastic off a glass-topped stove.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis <snerk> 69! <snerk> Amurrkin out and [del]THE SKY IS MELTIN’!!![/del] rainy, with a predicted high of ONLY 74 (We’ll freeze to death!) and rain for the day. I have an appointment to see the doc and the vampires at eight forty-five this mornin’. After that laundry is on the agenda. Sup shall be grilled poke chops, squishes, green beans, and rolls. Not very imaginative but will fill up tummies, so there’s that.
Peaches good on y’all for takin’ care of all that. Definitely no fun but as you said it’s a relief to know it’s all done.
nellie yikes! Hope you get the plastic cleaned up. I have no idea as to how but mayhaps there’s some advice out on teh intartoobz.
Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy demands sustenance. Then, bother, alas, alack, and woe is me, I must purtify and don appropriate bein’ about the public attire. I think maybe long pants are in order.
Good morning again, everyone. The aforementioned pork butt was the best yet! I couldn’t resist eating bits and bites while pulling it, and got full before dinner. Since they had to smell it all day, the dogs got some too. Now have about 7 pounds of pulled pork in the fridge/freezer.
It’s 73 here, supposed to reach 90 this afternoon. I’ll just hang around in the A/C with Mr. Netflix since I’m retired and have nothing pressing to do. Lots of electrician work scheduled for tomorrow and the house will have no power, but the weather folks predict low 70’s then. Lucked out I guess.
Seems like Moanday… My girl didn’t make my coffee this morning so I had to do it.
Not much to do today. I suppose I could clean my office. We got a new cleaning person and she is not to enter any offices just the common areas. The last one would do my office floors.
I am gonna get hubs a smoker. Any suggestions? had to look up the spelling. didn’t look right.
Not much to say today. Have a great Tuesday all!
I tried that once, on a rainy day. Even though the door & (glass) ‘screen’ door were both closed except for the rare time in/out of them, the smoke permeated the house & smelled smoky for days. It really smelled like there was a fire in the house.
How do you do it, just light that tube & put it in your smoker w/o any other heat source?
Morning all. Between coaching soccer and watching the tackleball/baseball (the Cardinals seem to have forgotten the purpose of baseball is to score runs) games along with a WGN MAS*H marathon, I never did log into the internet last night. Looks like it was fairly interesting…
70F this morning with a50% chance of rain today. We’ll see if soccer gets practiced or not.
nellie, no suggestions on getting the plastic off, I think swampy has the best idea (or start a thread here on the Dope; lots of pretty smart people here, some of whom have probably done this before…
Peaches, glad you’ve done the paperwork needed; I agree, saves lots of hassles later. And good on visiting the crazy uncle. I concur, smoking a few at that stage of life probably won’t matter much.
Flyboy, congrats on winning and on the donating; I have others I donate too but St. Judes does good work.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off today. Gordie has already had 2 long walks, and repelled 3 assualts by The Invisible Mole People. Gonna head to the laundromat after brunch tacos.
Sounds like she was salt curing, and not brining it. And you need aromatics. And alcohol.
Gordie never tore up his toys. he did eat a chair, though.:dubious:
Flyboy, yay!
Nettie, about Ava.
Nellie, eek! I did that with an eye burner, which is an easier fix.
Driving to work, the car in front of me suddenly stopped. Four deer decided to saunter across the road. Good thing someone was in front of me. I may not have noticed the Bambis in time.
