Snl 4/24/10

Didn’t see one of these on the main page so I thought I’d start one. Here’s a news story with clips in case you missed it.

Host: Gabourey Sidibe
Music: MGMT

To be honest I didn’t really know what to expect. Sidibe didn’t fly into everyone’s consciousness doing comedy, she doesn’t have a long list of credits, and the people who saw her movie aren’t the usual SNL demographic. Oh, and she has one obvious physical characteristic ripe for exploitation in just about every kind of comedy there is.

I’m glad they didn’t go into that lowbrow humor, not because I don’t find it funny, but because that would be what’s expected and it would seem kind of cruel. I’m sure she knows exactly how much she weighs and I’m sure her weight isn’t lost on the rest of us. I agree with a lot of what the article says in that i t was an interesting episode, maybe light on the laughs, but decent.

I didn’t like that first sketch with Sidibe playing the crazy woman yelling from the window until I realized the joke. That was kind of brilliant actually, and totally made up for Keenan trying to sound like a gangster. He totally redeemed himself in the Millionaire sketch though, I don’t care what Yahoo thinks, it’s hilarious watching him try to pronounce Icelandic cities.

Cherry Battle: A little gross but the punchline is worth it, excellent comedic timing and use of delay.

I also really really liked Hader’s corespondent on Weekend Update. Some of the funniest sketches (Cow Bell!) had the performers cracking up. I love it when that happens and the audience does too. In fact, the only really great Debbie Downer sketches were the ones where Rachel cracks up

For some reason the girl scout cookie rant seems familiar. I’ve also wondered about the same thing before.

Hated the Public Service Workers awards. Too much talking and Sidibe’s monologue just wasn’t funny. And why did she do hers unaided and Bobby Moynahan do his with a piece of paper in front of him?

I don’t know about you guys, but I love all of Jenny Slate’s bell salesman sketches. It’s just the way she talks and the way the bells sound :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I would have liked the last sketch with the reformed racist at Sidibe’s press panel if I could hear what Forte was mumbling about. I had to rewind it to hear why the audience cracked up at one point.

Overall, an interesting episode. Didn’t hate it, and only really ignored one segment. Happy they didn’t do any fat jokes.

I can’t wait for Betty White in 2 weeks!!!

I’d put it along with January Jones as one of the worst shows of the season. The only part I found remotely funny was Hader on Weekend Update.

For a long time, Weekend Update was the best part of SNL and could always be counted on to be funny—Now it’s about the worst part of the show (which is really saying something because SNL is usually piss-poor as of late) though Bill Hader’s queerboy club-kid bit was spot on.

In general, Billl Hader is the best thing about Saturday Night Live these days, but overall, last night’s show was another lame attempt at hipster humor.

Ditto.
