SNL Jan 21, 2006, Carol before Midnight, WTF?

Very bad show so far. The Arrr sketch went on forever. Carol & Horatio need to be banished from TV. How could they show this stinker before midnight? I thought it was 12:45 filler.

The opening was pretty good, but the rest has blown chunks.

I disagree: “Young Chuck Norris” was totally rad, and I liked the Cat Fancy reporter sketch (mostly because I’m a sucker for cats).

I generally cut the show a lot more slack than most folks when sketches are weak, but this isn’t just awful–it’s god-awful.

(OK, “Young Chuck Norris” was pretty awesome.)

Hey I posted before the skits you listed. I didn’t like the Cat Fancy sketch either.
Al Gore skit on the news was good, “I hate him too” “No, you definitely loss” “I should be President”
Good Week End Update.

Jim

The Cat Fancy thread was freaking my cats out. They were all looking at the TV with distressed expressions, since it sounded like some poor kitty was being tortured… no, it’s just a Siamese being himself.

The Strokes also sucked bigtime. Julian was yowling worse than the Siamese. I don’t remember them being this bad last time they were on.

Drew Barrymore making fun of her Golden Globes outfit was funny. I’m glad she realizes that her dress was horrendous.

Hehehe. The screw up with the hotel TV was highly entertaining. Didja see the head of the techie run by the camera to fix it?

And I enjoyed the Peter Sarsgaard SARS Guard. For about thirty seconds.

Saaaaaaaarsgaaaaaaaard!

Without a doubt, this was the worst SNL I have ever seen.

It makes me sad.

The show is like a coma patient: You keep waiting for it to snap out of it and get back to “normal,” but every time you stop in for a visit, it’s still just laying there, lifeless.

I think it’s time to pull the plug.

This will be the first time I’ve joined the chorus of Internet critics panning “SNL.” The past two shows have been godawful. I had high hopes after a couple of decent December shows, but now it’s like they’re not even trying. Pirates who like to say “aaarrrr”? Holy crap.

Of course, I always keep in the back of my mind the way SNL generally operates (according to Tom Shales’ book and other sources): On the first day, the writers all pitch their ideas to the host, and it’s up to him/her to decide which sketches are worthy of pursuing. It could just be that Peter Sarsgaard and Scarlett Johansson passed up comedy gold and okayed all the wrong sketches. Conversely, Jack Black and Dane Cook, who obviously have comedy chops, picked some pretty good sketches.

If the Steve Martin episode is noticeably superior to January’s efforts, I think it’ll bear out my theory that the host can make or break an episode in more ways than one.

Was it just my imagination, or did Parnell look like he lost a bet and had to participate in that Target skit? I’ve never seen him mail one in before (he may have, but at least he looked like he was trying), but this one you could almost see his sighs and rolling eyes.

No offense to Parnell (who I still contend is the highlight of the show), but wouldn’t you be bored or embarrassed to be part of that sketch?

Count me in as someone else who has never got onboard the “SNL Sucks” bandwagon, but HOLY SHIT!!! This is the worst SNL I have ever seen! I hate myself for watching, but I thought it had to get better. Never have I been that wrong in life! Gawdalmighty, without a doubt the suckiest SNL ever. I was horrified by this episode. I can’t believe I put myself through that horrible, horrible show. Simply appaling - I never cracked a smile…

Google Ads is offering me a “Van Down By The River” t-shirt. Ha! Wow, how timely. Just about 14 years too late on that one…

What? No love for Gays in Space?

SNL isn’t supposed to be funny anymore – we just didn’t get the memo.

Wow, that sucked. Sarsgaard doesn’t have much of a personality, does he?

Does anyone have a link for the “Young Chuck Norris” video? I’ve poked around a bit, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Yeah, that one was rough.

It’s not there now, but check gorillamask.net (site NSFW) over the next couple of days.

I honestly can’t think of one that would make me proud to be a part of.

I like Parnell, too, and he should jump ship soon if his career means anything to him. That could be said for a lot of the cast, though. Sanz should just jump off a boat. Wearing lead boots. Period.

Pretty bad show. The only thing worth tuning in for, as is so often the case, was Weekend Update. The opening monologue had some promise, but it was quickly down hill from there.

I agree with the title of the thread – Carol? Before midnight?? WTF??? It’s pretty sad if she’s the show’s biggest current character. (And what a witty catchphrase: “I’m Carol.”) Is she in fact the show’s biggest character at the moment? Any others I’m missing? When was the last spin-off movie?

It sounds like I had a LOT more fun than you guys did last night. While you were watching SNL, I had the good fortune of tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep because of a toothache!
