Hi, this is my first time posting here. What could be so enraging to drag me kicking and screaming to a place I don’t like to post and have avoided like the plague? Why SNL, of course.
I stopped watching the show some time about 2 years ago. It just wasn’t funny. There’d be a glimmer of a funny joke in two sketches at the beginning, and then it would be an hour and 15 minutes of lame, ass-biting crudola.
For some reason I started watching again. Tonight was hosted by Lucy Lui. I missed the opening, and the intro with some skits playing on Asian stereotypes that might have been funny. I did see the Jeopardy skit. It was very hilarious watching the Robin Williams bit - absolutely fabulous! The voice, the mannerisms - dead on. Sean Connery was okay, but Will Ferrell doing Alex Trebek is pathetic. Didn’t get the jibes against Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The next skit, however, tanked worse than an M1 Abrams. It was horrible! Horrible! Horrible! The show hostess was grating enough, but then was Molly Shannon doing that character that throws her leg up in the air. God that’s the worst piece of shit. That character wasn’t funny two years ago when I watched it and wanted to gag. That bit is one of the things that drove me away from the show last time. What the hell are they still doing pulling out that lame-ass crap? Not to mention the rest of the skit was completely worthless. I mean, “he-she”? I don’t have a problem with lesbians - hell, I like lesbians - but the skit made no point and was as funny as Showgirls without the pussy. It literally gave me a headache. I finally hit the mute button, but it was too late. I would rather lick the sweat off a donkey’s balls than listen to that again. And I have no particular affinity for sweat, donkeys, or licking balls. Even the Weekend Update didn’t fully get the pain to go away. (The James Madison bit didn’t help any.)
Somebody please shoot Molly Shannon (and Will Ferrell while you’re at it), and then burn all the old tapes so I never have to hear that again.
Step away from the television, do something else, and get a fucking life. If you don’t like it, fine. Suggesting anyone besides Urkel or the Pepsi Girl should be harmed and or murdered is a bit much.
Seriously. You said you stopped watching it for a while - so why’d you start watching it again? Did you actually think it would get better? If so, why? Has this been a general trend with this show over the last 15 years? Hell no. It’s strictly for 14 year-olds so they can crack up their friends with lame-ass impersonations of the cheerleaders or whatever the fuck the “funny” characters are supposed to be now. Same function as it served when I was 14. Get over it. Oh, and before you think of posting it, there are already a few posts about how MTV sucks too.
When they hadn’t gotten started I saw it would be bad and switched to watching an old Letterman video.
You missed a really good intro scene, the one before they say “Live from NY…”.
The Al Gore and GW Bush were really funny. They obviously rehearsed that and polished every line.
That’s what the whole show needs, is decent editing. Too much sounds like first-draft stuff and filler. An few skits have a pay-off joke to carry you out.
Well, Max, you and I have found a point of absolute agreement. And may I compliment you on your ability to describe her precisely. You found all the words I have been searching for since I first laid eyes on her.
stoid
With so many channels on your television, you should be able to find something else that is more entertaining than SNL. I stopped watching the show about 3 years ago, and haven’t gone back since. I suggest that you do the same, if you don’t like it. That’s the only way they will change what they do. When the rating drop, because people actually pull their heads out of their asses and push that little button on their remote control, or turn the knob, changes will be made in the show. While mindless idiots watch the shit, the shit will keep flowing.
And, if you don’t like the shit on television, READ A FUCKING BOOK.
One of the things I hate most about SNL is how every third skit seems to be a parody of a talk show/public-access-type show. Yeah, we know, there are a lot of silly talk shows. Yeah, we know, there are a lot of silly low-budget public access shows. It’s not fucking funny.
(Wayne’s World sketches are exempt from this criticism, since they are actually funny).
I saw a little of it, and while what I saw was mostly mired in its usual mediocrity, I thought the girl-group/MTV/TRL skit was hysterical. Lucy Liu has pretty good comic timing.
Since you mentioned Wayne’s World, wasn’t that webcast-from-college-dorm skit basically a poor rehash of Wayne’s World?
I actually watched this weekend, as I was sick as a dog and didn’t have enough energy to press the buttons on the remote.
What I haven’t gotten about SNL for years is that the writers have forgotten a simple concept – once you’ve hit the punch line, END THE FREAKING SKIT.
I didn’t see this week, but since you didn’t mention it, I assume that they did not do the most awful, irritating, mentally disturbing, moronic, poorly written, terribly acted, half-assed, imbecilic, worthless piece of fried monkey shit-skit ever…
This, of course, is “Dog Show!”
Beating on a fucking drum every nine seconds and yelling “dog show”? That’s funny to you people? Oh, no wait, you’ve also taken a couple of rat-looking fucking poodles and put sweaters on them. Oh, now that is funny.
You assholes. I take back the mentally disturbing part, because that might imply that there was something interesting about it.
I’m still a big fan of SNL. But my approach to it is a bit different. I look at SNL as I do a football team I have been a fan of - for better or worse - for 25 years.
Y’know what I mean; every season a few new faces, etc., some years they have a great offense, some years their special teams make the difference, some years are Super Bowl-quality, other years they are in the toilet with no forseeable hope of recovering. But year in and year out I watch them and root for them.
This most recent episode had a new Christmas classic, the skit (starring Shannon and Dratch) with the tree ornaments worried about being left off the tree and/or thrown away. It wasn’t howlingly funny but it was amusing, and it was a great skit and genuinely very touching.
“Goth Talk” is a riot, “Uncle Jemima’s Malt Liquor” is a quality corporate sponsor, the Smigel cartoons are awesome. The recent show hosted by Christopher Walken was a scream. The trashy, “retahd” South Bostonians and their wasteoid pals are pretty funny. There’s enough good stuff to keep me coming back, year after year, and every year I see something new that’s funny.
The only thing I ever really enjoy on SNL are the presidential skits and the cartoons (Saturday Morning Funhouse or something like that). Now I think the cartoons are gone because they’ve got ther own 1/2 hour on Comedy Central. (The host is annoying, but they have some good animal skits. A cross-dressing kangaroo puppet wearing a strap-on pouch - HA!)
I’ve switched to Mad TV. They too have some annoying sketches, but they’re WAY better than SNL. I switch back and forth just in case something funny happens on SNL (a raging fire on the live set?), but it rarely does.
Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman … Now that was SNL at its finest. While there have been some bright spots since then, the show has long been a pale shadow of its original self.
My approach to SNL: I tape the episodes that have good musical guests. I fast forward to the musical performances and sometimes stop and watch a skit if it looks funny. I taped last week’s episode when U2 was on (of course they were awesome) and watched a few of the skits and they were actually moderately funny. Val Kilmer’s overacting that makes his movies suck somewhat fit the SNL platform.
Hastur, why don’t you take a grenade and stick it up your ass? Pull the pin and play paint-the-walls-with-dickweed.
woodstockbirdybird, I stopped because it sucked. I came back because I had heard from somewhat reliable sources that some of it was funny again. Case in point - the aforementioned Robin Williams, the Weekend Update is recovering from Colin Quinn, the political bit on the unresolved election two weeks ago, when Christopher Walken hosted. Sadly, a lot of it is still dreck. Thus, I probably won’t watch it that much.
Maybe I’m wrong here, but I thought this was the pit. Isn’t this where we’re supposed to vent, to let off invective, to scream and yell and call people names and be nasty? Isn’t this the forum where we don’t have to be reasonable, just angry? I came here to post this, not because I wanted criticism for my stupid decision to give the show another chance, but because I suffered through that moronic blast of mind debilitating pap smear and I needed to do something to unload. Thus I posted here, where I don’t usually even read, because this is the forum we scream and yell nasty stuff. Telling me to get a fucking life, to change the fucking channel, to go read a book - those are pathetic lame responses. NO FUCKING SHIT!!!
I wasn’t even going to bother coming back to read this thread. I think that’s even better advice.
Rachel Dratch, which is she? Oh, like I care.
ReservoirDog, THANK YOU! That was another big part of quitting watching. Do they still do that, too? Gack!
it is 99% shit now and someone should kick lorne michaels in the ass for allowing that crap on the air-i too quit watching it a few years ago and was amazed at how bad it had become-
mad tv is funny-then its reruns of dick van dyke, andy griffith, TVLAND!
