Snoopy Gets Star on Walk of Fame

Story here.

I assume the Schulz estate is paying for this, as I’ve read these things ain’t cheap. Costs the honoree something like $25,000 I think it is, plus you have to agree to keep the star maintained. But I can’t think of another animated character more deserving.

Well, arguably as deserving are Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Donald Duck, the Rugrats, Shrek, the Simpsons, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh and Woody Woodpecker.
Because they all have stars already.

No, I’d still vote Snoopy over those. But for all the others, I assume it would be a studio paying the costs. In this case, is it being paid for by the Schulz estate or the studio that is producing the new film?

I tried calling to find out, but I must have had a bad connection because all I could hear on the phone was this “Mwah-Mwah-mwah-MWAH-MWAH…” sound.

Considering the timing, I would guess it’s the studio. Publicity, and all that.

Wait, the celebrities (or those working on their behalfs) pay for the stars on the Walk? I thought it was just a matter of some committee or something choosing whom to honor.

Though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at crass commercialism in Hollywood.

I see from Wikipedia that the fee is up to $30,000 now, payable at the time of selection. It says: “The fee is usually paid by the nominating organization, which may be a fan club, or a film studio, record company, broadcaster, or other sponsor involved with the prospective honoree.” So usually not the artist him- or herself.

Any mention of the Walk of Fame always brings to mind Celluloid Heroes by The Kinks…

Well, while Snoopy already had a US postage stamp, the rest of the gang* now do too.
*alas, no Peppermint Patty, Marcie, Franklin or Woodstock.

So, are his footprints going to be shown in the “happy dance” way?

Of course, those characters were all introduced *after *the Christmas special which these stamps are based on.

Considering some of the talentless hacks who already have stars (Ryan Seacrest has one in front of Graumans for fucks sake) I’m shocked that Mickey doesn’t already have one.

Seems appropriate, Snoopy is a cultural icon and animated characters can have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Simpsons have their own.

Yes, I know–they’re all featured in the Thanksgiving special. But still sorry they probably won’t get their own. Also, it would’ve been cool to have one of the Xmas stamps of the kids dancing.

I don’t understand how anyone is “deserving” since you are paying for it. That’s not an award, that’s just merchandise you bought. I feel the same about insert Hollywood award here such as the Oscars, Golden Globes, Academy Awards- I am 100% sure they are all bought and paid for in one form or another. And yes, blowjobs count.

I’m chairing the SDMB “Dopie” awards… guess who just got a nomination?

The Walk of Fame stars do have to be nominated. How the nominations are prompted, I dunno, but it’s not like you can just walk in and order one. I think a few faded actors have actually turned down the offer because they could not afford it.
