And boy, oh boy, oh boy, do you ever appreciate the warm weather when it finally returns.
(Well, at least I do!)
Holy Freaking Hannah! Enough with the damn snow.
I’ve lived in Lovely London, Ontario Canada, for going on 30 odd years. In the heart of the, ‘snow belt’, that strip of land, between two great lakes, wherein you can get massive, ‘lake effect’, snow from either side, depending which way the wind blows. So, like, I’ve seen some bad storms, some huge snow falls, snow days that shut down the entire region, it’s all part of the fun of living in South Western Ontario.
But we are now on the ragged fringes of Biblical weather, where I am. A massive, slow moving cold air system is streaming across the, as yet unfrozen lakes, and dumping snow in a line that will not move off from over the city.
We’ve had, in excess of 100 cm of snow since in started over 2 days ago. We’ve had snow days before but I’ve never heard of 2 back to back, like we had today. Everyone spent yesterday, (roads, schools, uni, businesses all closed up), shoveling out, we’re talking about shifting, in excess of 4 ft of snow off everything. It took the whole damn day, and never once stopped snowing. I shoveled the walk out to the street, where there are no cars and are the only marginally passable places to trudge through, twice yesterday. When I awoke this morning, there was no evidence that I had even shoveled, you could not detect where the walk was, and only barely see a bump where the car was.
And, here’s the beautiful part, at close of business today, it was announced that the city is closed again tomorrow, no buses, no mail, no school, no uni. Closing the Uni is a huge deal here, this will be the third day in a row. That’s right, if you’re keeping score at home that’s 3 snow days in a freaking row. Besides they never announce such things the evening before. They traditionally make everyone in the city wake up early and listen/watch to discover what’s open or closed. Not today, it seems.
They seem to believe we could get another 25 - 45 cm overnight tonight, and, that it will snow all day tomorrow. There is literally nowhere to put any more snow.
(Of course, I have a wood stove, and cooked a yummy roast beef dinner, had friends in, all snug and warm, and well fed, in case you’re feeling sad for me.)
But please, please, please, mister weatherman, give us a break already, pass it on to someone else already! (My personal theory is that this is revenge for the awesome hot bakey summer we had, starting in May and running till the second week of September!)Yikes! I’m a little afraid to go to sleep, afraid of what I’ll awake to.
I guess what I’m saying is that cold is really our ONLY problem, and we have all these systems in place to deal with it (heated garages, heated cars, heated houses, heated malls) - you never have to go outside if you don’t want to. And there are many Canadians who enjoy a beautiful Canadian summer, and a beautiful Florida or Arizona winter.
Sitting here in a pair of shorts and nothing else, eating an apple and watching the pink and grey galahs feeding in the backyard.
I am thinking of Elbows with all the snow. Then I think I can sit out at 7 pm tonight- still in shorts- and have a cold beer (not Spitfire) and it will still be light.
But I did think of you Elbows. You can think of me on Christmas day when it will probably be 100 degrees and I will probably be sick of the heat and the flies.
It’s raining again.
To the north of us many towns have been completely flooded out earlier this week. The rains predicted today and tomorrow are just going to add insult to injury. And to the south, some roads have been cut this afternoon which might make our trip to Melbourne on the weekend a bit hairy.
But yeah, it’s warm, sticky and very VERY wet.
Actually, I love it, but feel sorry for the poor bastards who have houses/farms and crops and livestock underwater.
Just blame it on Dorothea Mackellar, Aus poet who wrote:
I love a sunburnt country
A land of sweeping plains
Of rugged mountain ranges
Of DROUGHTS AND FLOODING RAINS.
Speak for yourself, please!
I’m more like the little polar bear cub who asked his mother “Am I really a polar bear, mum?” “Of course”, his mother said, “I am a polar bear, daddy is a polar bear and you are our child, so you are a polar bear, too”.
The little polar bear cub then went to his father and asked, “Am I really a polar bear?” “Of course”, his father said, “I am a polar bear, mummy is a polar bear and you are our child, so you are a polar bear too, but why do you ask?” “Well”, the little polar bear cub said, “if you are a polar bear and mum is a polar bear and I am a polar, then why am I so friggin’ cold?”
It’s about 25° and clear here. There is no precipitation of any kind on the way for the foreseeable future. If the damn wind would stop, it would actually be quite nice outside.
Sigh. We were just given a really nice snow blower. Our first one ever. It has a wind screen and heated handles.
Hey, I said we were prepared for it - I don’t think I said everyone here loves it.
BBC says they’ve closed the Panama Canal, the rain’s so heavy there right now.
It’s 10F right now and it’s been that cold on and off for 3 days. It hit right after a bunch of snow. One morning it was actually down to 8F.
I’ve turned on the heater for the first time this year as it is 58 degrees F and headed downward; I hate this damned frigid weather and am thinking of moving to Belize. Or Key West.
22 currently here, with tomorrow forecast for 33 with a cool change in the afternoom.
Of course, that’s Celcius.
We now have 3-1/2 to 4 feet of snow, which has been falling non-stop for the last 90 hours. We are about 2 inches short of the all-time records. We are getting a ‘break’ the next three days, until Sunday night when a coastal storm is expected to dump on who knows how much more…I’ve been shovelling one side of the driveway so Mr. Sali can get his car off the road and clear the whole thing with the snowblower. If it’s light and fluffy, I can shovel the driveway myself (hey, I’m home all day, what else do I have to do?) even with my bad back. And clear off the deck for the ground-feeding birds, there’s a flock of cardinals that make the effort well worth while!
-20 here in eastern Ontario tonight. About 5 cm of snow on the ground, but it’s probably not going anywhere. We’re supposed to get 20 cm on Sunday.
We’re up in the hills, but a long way east of the lake-effect snow belt. I was just reading that a town near London has had 1.7 metres of snow in the past week. That’s as tall as I am!
You still in Bancroft?
salinqmind, where the hell are you guys!?!
Liverpool NY USA - According to her public profile. In other words a few hundred miles due east of elbows, in London, ON.
Jeez. And here I was complaining about it being 8 degrees - with windchill. No sticking snow, just dusting on cars!
We’re getting ready for the first big snowstorm of the year. They are predicting 6 to 10 inches this weekend on top of the couple we got last night. My shovels are ready! Hopefully it’s not too cold or windy on Sunday so we can go out and build a snowman.
Snowing again - getting some extra cover on the slopes after a warm week. Looking good for the weekend of snowbound comedy.
Rumours of a big storm for next weekend are looking good.
