Snow in unlikely parts of Oregon on the 29th–enough to close passes and sections of I-5, as well as make a bit of a mess in town. My partner got stuck trying to get up our hill in her very new car; as the former New Englander, I got to trot halfway down the hill with a snowshovel (who’s laughing now?) and a bag of sand to perform the rescue. Today it’s a bit icy, with clumps of snow/ice falling from the trees. We only lost one large branch, because I went out periodically and shook the trees and bushes. We may lose some of the less hardy herbs; it will be interesting to see what benefited and what did not come spring. My shoveling and tree-shaking and sanding seem to have entertained the neighbors, but hey, I can get in and out of the driveway today and they can’t. The sky is presently a foreboding bright yellow-grey that may or may not bring more snow tonight. Have I mentioned that yesterday’s garbage pickup still hasn’t happened?
That, and it’s darned pretty.
Laugh away, Cervaise! I’m enjoying it! There’s not as much as when I lived in the desert. Not even enough to make a snowhead. (Got a great pic of one I made when I lived in Lancaster.)
So… Seattle, eh? Know of any jobs for a mainframe type?
The propane guy is here. Woohoo! An excuse to go outside!
Snow?
<< Yawn >>
Yesterday in Memphis it was 65 degrees. I went out wearing a t-shirt.
Well, we got 25 inches in 24 hours on Friday (Dec. 26th) at my house here in Salt Lake. The snowstorm was the 5th biggest in Utah history. Our power went out at 3AM Friday morning, and didn’t come back on until yesterday afternoon.
ah the joys of snow, getting up at 4 am to shovel, so you can get to work by 6, then just as you are finishing up the cockadoodie snowplow goes by and blasts in your drive way grrrrr. then you slip and slide all the way to work at 2 mph cuz you can’t see a frigging thing. work all day worrying about how the heck you are going to make it home, and 1/2 your coworkers can’t make it in (double grrrrrrrr) so no chance of getting the work done and getting out early. oh yeah snow doncha love it?
Driving in adverse weather conditions can be dangerous. The more time you spend on the road, the greater your exposure. So to minimize the amount of time you spend on the road, you should drive faster than usual. If you drive fast, you’ll spend less time driving and thus reduce the amount of time you spend driving in dangerous conditions.
I heard that most collisions happen within five miles of one’s home. So I moved.

Snowed here too! What I can’t believe is that my kiddos are not out of bed yet and playing in it.
So, for awhile anyway, it’s nice and quiet, the coffee is good, rich and strong, and I can enjoy the scenery.
I stayed home from work today because it seems there were all kinds of accidents down here in the South End. I just didn’t feel like hassling with over an hour long trip to work, only to probably be released early anyway.
:o
Besides, four-wheel drive means NOTHING on ice.
We got lots overnight, 5 or 6 inches and still coming down hard. The buses have been diverted from the main street a couple of blocks away and are using the side street across the park from me. (I suppose there was a car accident blocking the road.) A semi came by and seemed to have trouble making the corner, since he was stopped in the intersection for a few minutes, but he’s gone now.
I think I’ll have to bundle up and walk to the store, just for the fun of it. I’m glad I don’t have to go to work today!
Where do you keep the R1? In that little shed?
I’m off to the Rose Bowl, see you next year!
QueenBee, if you’re reading this, don’t believe a word and please go clean the middle room.
The shed is a little too little for it, since it’s full of stuff already. The R1 and the XJ600 are under the best covers the dealer had.
Yup, the same here. Not surprising, since you’re only 35 miles away.
I went down to Ferndale earlier. Birch Bay Lyndon Road is a little icy. Four wheel drive does help a little with the ice, but not as much as keeping the speed down! They don’t/haven’t ploughed the road here, so 4WD is a must. (I’d probably do okay with a small front-wheel drive car, if I had one. My old Chevy Sprint Metro was adequate in the snow.)
The death of my mother’s husband earlier today, mentioned in another thread, has taken a bit of the enjoyment out of the weather though.
We’ve hardly had any snow this year. It’s been surprisingly warm. When my mom in the Bay Area told me that it was in the 40s there a couple days ago, I checked weather.com and discovered that it was actually warmer here in Chicago than in California (by two degrees)! Yes, in December!
I, for one, am bummed. It’s so pleasant to wake up to a lovely fresh snow.
