Trying to explain why somethings funny to someone who doesn’t think it is is always a fools errand, but FWIW, I find it funny cause it works on three levels:
The original story that spawned it (from memory, someone altered a co-workers computer to replace LOL with the offending phrase as a prank) is funny
The whole idea of a one man meme is funny.
The weird rage that a completely innocuous and inoffensive joke, that Bo doesn’t even use that often, provokes in some people is funny.
Bo’s catchphrase doesn’t bother me. It actually is the kind of inane silliness that usually would bug me a little bit, but for some reason, it doesn’t. It just seems kind of light and fluffy and, I don’t know, kinda sounds like fun!
If I had a quarry, I’d be throwing shit down there all the time.
Well, no, actually that sounds a lot like littering, and that’s not cool. Never mind.
Congrats Guinastasia, you’ve just blown the lid off this whole thing, exposed the raw truth, and thrown it down…
err, hold on
Bo has a dull catchphrase, but he really knows his music, and contributes a lot to threads in Cafe Society.
You seem to think you can meta-post, contributing and signifying nothing, in the hope of approval from a gallery that detests you anyway. Good luck with that neediness!
You don’t really like things, you just think you do. You only really like cute things that aren’t too much of a burden.
Imagine if you knew him in real life and he said that phrase in 90% of conversations you had with him. You’d be thinking about avoiding him wouldn’t you? Admit it.
If he closed every post with it, it would get on my nerves, but he seems to limit himself to the occasional quarry invitation and I find it vaguely amusing. It’s his thing.
Oh, I can think of another one. It was only a few months ago that a new poster was typing all of her messages in a green font, resulting in some complaints and a Pit thread. Her response was essentially the same as Snowboarder Bo’s — this is my thing, I like it, just deal with it! And, like our friend Bo, she found it hi-larious that people were complaining about her harmless little quirk.
That turned out a bit differently, though; the mods told her to knock it off, which she grudgingly did. That obviously isn’t happening in this case; if Shodan can do his middle-finger “Regards” for ages, the mods obviously aren’t going to start policing tired sitcom catchphrases.
For my part, I generally enjoy Bo’s contributions to the board. I was hoping that he was conducting some kind of social experiment in meme propagation; I’m actually a little disappointed to learn that he’s doing this because he thinks it’s funny.
I actually do have friends like this. You learn to ignore it. (One friend, whom I dearly love, says “Comcrapst” for “Comcast” all the time. I have no idea how you can dedicate that level of hatred towards a cable company that every time you mention their name, it’s some shitty joke version of it, but it apparently happens. You’d think this doesn’t come up in conversation very often, but it does. It’s on the level of “let’s throw stuff down in the quarry.” I just ignore it because otherwise, he’s okay. Same with the Shodan stuff I mentioned. They both seem reasonable enough, minus these catch phrases which they seem to continue just because they know they piss some people off. And, in some way, I have to say I respect that needly personality.)
Thére was a kid in my old neighborhood who ran around for weeks yelling “fuck me in the goat ass” after hearing the Adam Sandler comedy bit. It reminds me of that. The little shit thought he was real funny, at least he did until we dragged him down to the quarry and threw him in.
Where do the lines fall between people’s harmless albeit annoying “things” and trolling and being a jerk?
Why was posting in green across the line (and I forget, was that Grapist bit across the line for colorist reasons too?) but doing something that is even more clearly done with a pathetic intention to annoy is not?
In any case Guin you are feeding a troll. A troll rarely stops that which gets it fed. (Don’t give a fuck if he otherwise contributes; this is trolling, fairly ineffective and weak assed trolling, but trolling.)
