Snowfall measurement data

So I’m gritting my teeth through New Haven’s part of this snowstorm, feeling superior for remembering the Minnesota trick for driving in these conditions (don’t), and I’m wondering how much snow we’ve gotten so far. What’s the “official” word? NOAA to the rescue, right?

Wrong. There are two close hits: the “precipitation accumulation” in various timespans and the “1-day snowfall” listings. The first measures water content, so what fell between 7 and 10 tonight comes in at 0.03" (which seems a little low even so). The second is pretty much exactly what I want, except they’re using some weird definition of “most recent 1-day period” which says the most recent day is January 17.

All the local news stations and the Weather channel have plenty of predictions, but no reports – which I’m sure is great from a journalism point of view. So, who can tell me where I can look up how much snow has fallen? It really shouldn’t be that hard a question to find, but it seems to be completely obscured.

I had the EXACT same problem… wanted to know how much snow was really out there, since i can’t make it through it to get to work tonight…

i had to resort to actually going outside

Might work for you, but I’ve got a lot of drifting around my neighborhood. Also, half the point is to compare notes with friends in the DC area, so an “official” count would be appreciated.
