Sounds idiotic to me and I bet all the datafighters at work agree with me.
I hadn’t heard the term, but it seems that various government agencies and representatives of the “snow and ice industry” have been using it for quite awhile.
It does sound snappier than “them people who drive the snowplows”.
And here’s utterly fascinating (for a few seconds, anyway) 1930s film of the Walter Snowfighter, a primeval snowplow truck (which apparently didn’t do all that well in really deep snow).
*I was disappointed to find that the online store of the Snowfighters Institute does not offer t-shirts. 
If it’s just the people on the snowplows, then I’d just say snowplowers or snowplow drivers. I assumed at the very least that it meant a bunch of different techniques in handing snow and ice. You know, putting a bunch of different jobs into one label for convenience.
Ok, this us my first year at this job, but one of my duties is to plow snow (ice, sleet, whatever) from the highway.
So I have spent a bit of time in classes and orientation and “snow drills” around people who not only plow, but also coordinate and supervise how a storm will be handled. As in what surface treatments if any, when they’ll go down, which roads get priority etc.
I have never heard anyone use the term “firefighters.” And I imagine if anyone did, they’d be laughed out of the room.
