Or, in my case, if just ONE person had come out in the early 60s. I came out in 1963, and as far as I knew I was the only openly gay person in the world.

It’s a lot easier to deal with things, if you know others have dealt with them, and survived. Bruce Jenner is just one, in a long line of transgendered folk. But he makes it a little easier for those who follow. There are parallels between his journey and that of a gay person, and if his story furthers understanding, it benefits us all.
