It does seem to reinforce gender differences in society rather than to seek to minimize them. I prefer an ideal society where there aren’t any really important gender differences: both boys and girls can play with either/both dolls and guns.
Suppose that there were no obvious societal differences. No preconceived roles in dress and costume, no traditional male or female jobs or roles. No patriarchal assumptions in corporate or political hierarchy. Then…what would changing sexes really mean? Why would anyone, then, want to “live as a woman” when they would already be doing so in every overt way?
Because what you’re saying is inane. It’s like learning that the capital of Montana is Helena and saying, “Whoa, I need to wrap my mind around this.” Bruce Jenner suffers from gender dysphoria and is taking the appropriate medical steps towards a healthy mind and body congruence. What else is there to get?
When I was a kid, O.J. Simpson was one of several people held up to me as a success story. I didn’t have much trouble reassessing him in 1994. Bruce Jenner hasn’t killed anyone.
Sums it up nicely. Most folks really don’t care and just wish Bruce or whatever her name is would just fade away. There’s too many other important newsworthy events to focus on.
There’s a difference between an intellectual understanding of facts - “Bruce Jenner has stated he is transgender and is transitioning to being a woman” - and emotional understanding of someone else’s viewpoint and motivation for taking an action. I believe the latter is the one Ambivalid is having some difficulty with.
Lots of people do care about Bruce Jenner though, for a variety of reasons. And having THE US Olympic athlete of the 1970s announce that he’s transitioning to being a woman is definitely newsworthy.
There’s lots of stuff on the news I don’t personally care about. That’s why God also gave us the ability to transition to a different television channel.
For someone who doesn’t care and doesn’t want to see this and would rather focus on something more “newsworthy” and is claiming that “most folks don’t care”, you sure are repeating this notion that you don’t care.

Let me get this straight. He “joined up” with the Kardashians in 1991 by marrying the former Kris Kardashian and then waited for sixteen years before the eponymous reality show premiered in 2007. They only divorced last month. And this was all in pursuit of fame and selling out?
