Essentially. My impression is that many trans people and their supporters are eager to jump directly to a world where gender transition is not just not denounced, but is a complete non-event. Like a new hairstyle, maybe worth a casual passing comment, if noticed at all. The impatience is understandable, but we’re not there yet, particularly when it’s a well-known public figure.
And anyone who’s reaching for torches and pitchforks because I implied that transitioning is as capricious a choice as changing hairstyles— don’t. I’m talking about people’s reaction to the change, not the change itself.

The Daily Mail posts nothing but shit stories that are less newsworthy than anything else every day. And every day you bring those shit stories over to the Dope and start threads on them and wring your hands about these faux serious situations. Like a kid who was a bit player on a TV show 10 years ago kills himself and that is totally share-able news that we should all pay attention to and have a discussion about. But a multi-generational public figure is bringing to light a serious issue that can mean life or death to many people? And one that has affected other members of this board, and an issue that one of your fellow members is dealing with right now. And you think it needs to be swept under the rug because it, what, bores you? Or maybe it squicks you out?

Why would you think so? Whatever genetic or environmental factors cause a person to be gay or straight, all the Duggar children have pretty much in common. In a random population, it’s possible to guess that a certain percentage are gay people, but a single family (however large) isn’t a random sampling.

With the exception of just a few on this thread, I am impressed by the amount of folks who truly are trying to understand both intellectually and emotionally. It’s not easy. Not for most of us. Every person that makes a real effort to educate themselves, can potentially help build a path and future with less discrimination, and fear of transgender people. You never know (until it does) when it can happen in your own family. And then, something that you have felt very much removed from your whole life is up close and personal.
The environmental factors, whatever they are, are apparently not things like “parenting”. For example, there is a well-documented increase in the prevalence of homosexuality in males who have older male siblings. This appears to be linked to a chemical change in the mother.
So Bruce Jenner enjoys heterosexual intercourse with women while at the same time feeling like his body shouldn’t have the anatomy that allows him to do that? Or is gender dysphoria not always accompanied by revulsion to one’s genitalia?

Exactly. Many people who are transgender and want to live their lives in a gender different to the one that matches their genitalia do so without having sexual reassignment surgery. It’s ultimately not about sexual activity or sexual equipment; it’s about who you feel you are. As Jenner put it, he has the soul of a woman. He can want to live as a woman even if he keeps the genitalia he was born with - he said in the interview that he’s 65, and content to be asexual for now as he figures things out.
