So Completely Loving Admin Professional's Day!!

I’m working on my teacher certification (still have another year) and I’ve been putting myself through school by working full-time as an administrative assistant for another department at my university. So this year, they’re pulling out all the stops for Administrative Professional’s Week:

Today: Dean of the college dept. I work for bought all the secretaries lunch at Macaroni Grill. (We took complete advantage by ordering dessert too!)

Wednesday: University-wide lunch for all admin assistants, secretaries, etc. with non-alcoholic pina colada type drinks and lots of prize giveaways. Okay, they called it something cheesy (Destination Excellence), but still…Very nice way to make us feel appreciated.

Thursday: The department I work for is ordering in lunch. This is also historically when the director of the center I work for gives gift cards (usually for La Madeline or the movies or something similar).

Friday: Dean of the college dept. is hiring a massage therapist to give all the admins/secretaries a 15-minute chair massage.

Even though I really love working at the school and love the people I work with, I’m not crazy about being a secretary EXCEPT for this week. This week being a secretary…ahem…administrative assistant just flat out rocks.

So any other secretaries feeling the love this week? Do tell!!

It’s a week? I thought it was just a day - tomorrow. I’m feeling no love right now.

I’m kind of a secretary. The position I hold used to be secretarial, but that was a few years ago. The department has expanded, the woman who had the job before (and couldn’t keep up with all the new stuff she had to do) was replaced by me. A big, important part of my job is secretarial–I do the leg work for my boss so she can make the big decisions, contact people for her, take the minutes at meetings, etc. So, a lot of times I get called a secretary. And I don’t mind that at all.

But I really hate the new term “Administrative Professional.” It’s not even descriptive! At least Administrative Assistant describes that your duties are to “assist.” Administrative Professional? It’s your job to be a professional? Professional what? grr.

Anyway—no fun secretary’s week stuff here yet. My boss will probably get me a card, ‘cause she’s cool like that. We’ll see.

A friend of mine posted this in her livejournal:
