What a huge blunder - Ok so they had to come up with an “interesting” story line for Beckett to get Stana to come back for another season, but what giant mistake it has been for the show.
The whole premise of Kate’s leaving is stupid. Also, if she can’t talk to Rick about why she needs to move out then she shouldn’t be married to him. Either stop this bullshit or end the show now.
Honestly, if Castle and Beckett aren’t going to work cases together, there’s no reason to watch.
I got a few chuckles from Fallon’s slapstick in “The Nose” but mostly the episode just reminded me how much I hate the Beckett/Castle split.
I haven’t watched since they got together. I tried one episode but it was just not the same. I also stopped watching Bones for the same reason. Some things are better just left alone.
I was guardedly optimistic about Season 8. Promoting Beckett was a natural next step and appeared to be a perfect way to open up some new storytelling angles. But the show suddenly feels as old and tired as it is. The Beckett/Castle split is dumb, the new arc story doesn’t interest me and even the sexy new English girl is a little underwhelming. I have a hard time believing that this season isn’t the end of the line.
Yeah, its kind of stupid isn’t it? She caught her mothers killer and major long term storyline is done, but now there’s shadow conspiracies and all that sort of stuff.
Then suddenly making them split for the purposes of protecting Castle, it just beggars belief…
I’ve found their shadow conspiracy stuff kind of crap anyway, the constant “people appear from nowhere, always seem to know where you are, always five steps ahead of you” thing is so worn its a cliche.
We officially gave up after the first (two-part?) episode. Agree that the split is beyond stupid. How is she even “protecting” him? He’s just as vulnerable as before, with the added bonus of her not being around to protect him. Stupidstupidstupid.
But, I disagree that they shouldn’t have got together. I’m glad to see that the “Moonlighting lesson” doesn’t always apply.
Of course, the whole “Castle disappears without a trace” was damn near as stupid as the current story line. The only reason (in the real world) I would forgive Beckett for her abandoning Castle was that he already did the exact same thing to her.
So it’s confirmed that Stana Katic and Tamala Jones are leaving the show after the current season. It’s unclear whether it means the end or not. The showrunner and Fillion have expressed interest in continuing, the only network exec who said that is no longer employed.
I think it’s run its course. I like the show, but really, hasn’t it told all the stories it came to tell? Let them have their happy ending and move on with dignity.
OTOH, if there was a spin-off show that was the continuing adventures of Alexis and Haley with occasional Castle cameos, I’d watch the hell out of that.
I couldn’t care less about Tamala Jones leaving, but Stana Katic changes that part of the show. Lke JSexton says, however, I’d watch a show with Alexis and Haley (with occasional Castle cameos).
Stick a fork in it - it’s done. Enough episodes to live for years in syndication and they ran out of decent scripts years ago. Time for everybody to move on. Maybe they can re-launch Spectrum!
I agree the show as it is jumped the shark long ago. I am going the other way then the crowd though, I find the British chick and Alexis trite and one-dimensioned (not to mention the daughter is a hot, redheaded Wesley from Star Trek). Instead, give me Castle working cases with Ryan and Espo just for the man-boy hijinks and add little does of the girls for eye candy.
I’ve mostly seen Castle in out-of-order reruns, but my sense is that it died about season 4 as far as I’m concerned. No particular event killed it, it’s just that reached point when they’ve overplayed sexual tension for too long to be believable and didn’t know how to make a relationship entertaining. (Frankly, ever since Moonlighting, I’ve had very little patience for that story, and I’m sure it was old long before that.)
It’s still fun enough as background noise while I’m working on tax returns or something, but not worth paying attention to.
The episode from last week, Death Wish, about Aladdin’s Lamp was the only one in recent memory that had that old Castle feel to it.
Castle having a PI office that serves little purpose, the almost complete elimination of the novel writing side, Beckett promoted to a useless position, the preposterous Great Conspiracy, etc.: It is over and done with.
I think the two-parter in LA with the Great Detective Society seemed like a spin-off attempt to me. But now with Katic leaving, it might have been a tryout for a Beckett-less version of the show. (She didn’t appear in the first part.)
I give you: Castle Legacy. Alexis goes back to train as an ME under Perlmutter, while keeping “Castle Investigations” going on the side. Personally I’m not a big fan of Haley, she seemed an unnecessary inclusion into this season, but I am up for cameos from the existing cast.
