I think he’s asking about the slur directed at Fuji, which was that the Irish are a bunch of drunken leprechauns or somesuch.
That was my interpretation, but frankly that entire thread is a confusing mess; and is also yet another example of American SDMB members insisting they know better about how things work in another country than the people who live there…
It is our moral duty to enlighten you from our shining city (er… country) on the hill. Make the necessary changes and move on.
Go along with it. It forestalls the inevitable invasion.
Have you considered making this your signature?
No. Even if ignoramus were a second-declension noun, it would pluralize with a single terminal -i: ignorami. But it is not, it is a verb, first-person indicative plural, “we do not know”.
Where Latin plural nouns end in -ii, their singulars end in -ius. Finding examples is left as an exercise for the student.
Since it’s not used as a verb in English, and it’s a loan word, wouldn’t the plural indeed be “ignoramuses”?
Also, I think a better translation than “not to know” would be “to durr huh hurr lol”.
Yes. The word is “ignoramuses”. Hypercorrection of Latinate loan-words is just awful. At least I don’t think Shodan actually meant it here. I would hate for him to have to add linguistic pretension to his already substantial list of faults.
I’ve heard the term ignorami before (probably in the simpsons).
You don’t have to read any of that thread. The implied insult is contained in one post, which I quoted in its entirety in my OP.
But ignoramus was not even in the thread title! It was imbeciles! Imbeciles!
I was goin to call Shodan on that as well, 'til I realized he was referring to the original embarassment of a thread that inspired my OP.
Glad to be of service. I will use that as an excuse to get bladdered tonight.
Sounds like a particularly simple form of paper-folding.
Last time I checked, James Blunt wasn’t Irish.
I was wondering what Bloomin’ reason you had to wake the spectre of Finn Again, when your complaint was largely with Fear Itself.
ReJoyce!
A common misconception. They are all drunken, but only a small percentage are leprechauns.
Ah, it’s Finnagains Wake…thanks for the LOL, Polycarp!
You know why the snakes really left Ireland? Why stay?
Universal health care.
