So, Fear Itself, are we helium-impaired imbeciles, or not?

Finnegans, actually, the title is imperative not possessive.

If we are ever in prison together, I want to be your bitch.

Wait, what? I’m pretty sure that Ireland’s health care system is even worse than the US’.

If that was a joke, I blame the ten IQ points I lost from that other thread.

Well, it was a joke, but I’d hardly say that Ireland’s health care system is worse than the US’. Unless you’re independently wealthy, of course.

Okay. My statement is based on anecdotes ruadh told me (and her opinion that Ireland’s health care system is worse than the US’), not on any actual…facts or data.

But where did they go? I hope they weren’t aiming to be in South Africa by next year

No worries. I’m pretty sure that noone comes to Ireland for world class specialist care, and I’m well aware that there’s often long waits for services. Still, my friends here tend to think I’m making shit up when I say that every year there are thousands of Americans who go bankrupt and lose their home and life savings due to medical costs.

[Pit Mode] Let me just add that Fear Itself is a miserable turd of a poster who doesn’t even have the decency to come out from behind the wall of soiled diapers he’s hiding behind to explain himself. Verily, he doth suck. [/PM]

You would not have chosen the username Doughbag if English were your native language.

Yes, I too get all my grammar lessons from cartoon shows where the shtick is that everyone is irredeemably stupid, naturally. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hm, I haven’t given institutional homosexuality serious consideration since I left school. Let’s just cross that bridge when we come to it, huh?

Actually s/he wrote it as the imperative in their post. If it had been a possessive it would have had an apostrophe between the n and the s.

Yes, I know. But the title comes from the name “Finnegan”, Finn Again comes from a bit about 20 pages in, IIRC

… or need an abortion, of course, though that has little to do with who’s paying for your care.

Hmm. I’m not sure I ever actually said it was worse than the US’s. In some respects it’s worse and in some respects it’s … less bad. I might have meant that it’s worse for me personally, since in my last US job I had free insurance through work and didn’t have to pay shit for my doctor’s visits, but obviously that doesn’t apply to everyone.

But Ireland certainly doesn’t have “universal health care”, at least not at the primary care level.

Well, it may not be called UHC, but we have a public health care system. Read up here Healthcare in the Republic of Ireland - Wikipedia
The board is called HSE (Health Service Executive)

If the system is efficient is debatable, but it is there. And generally better, than what any Joe Soap gets in the US and certainly not as good as what you get in like Germany. But there is always Bupa or VHI to boost your comfort.

For some odd religions reason abortion is illegal here. However, there are Ferries to the UK

… maybe not. However, I’m well aware at this point of the implications of the name.
It’s your choice to read into it whatever you want.
The meaning can vary from just a bag to put dough in - like in cooking…to eh, well…

Lisa: [writing about Springfield] We are a town of low-brows, no-brows, and ignorami.

Ah yes, well. For all the accusations of d-bag that fly around this place, it had me in stitches for a chap to show up and start innocently presenting the, erm, official viewpoint.

Anyway now that that’s out of the way, welcome to the SDMB and all that. Thanks for giving me a laugh. Help me out though and tell me the story- do you work in a bakery or something?

The issue wasn’t whether it was called “UHC” but whether it was actually universal. It is not universal at the primary level, doctor’s visits having to be paid out of pocket for most people and generally costing in the region of €60 (about $85).

If you’re talking about the public health care that any Joe Soap gets in the US, then you’re correct.

Well, sure, but there are private insurers to boost your comfort in the US, too. They don’t improve the quality of the public care available - arguably the opposite is true.

True, the system here is not perfect in Ireland.
To me as a German living here, it’s quite weird to pay for a doctors (GP) visit, but I got used to it by now. €60 isn’t the world and somewhat affordable. However, if the GP gets or sends me to get X-Rays done, I have to pay nothing else. Also my cancer treatment is FREE and I wont get denied service. If my kid needs an operation, I also will not have to loose our house and other privat possessions.

There are other things wrong with the system here. Like long waiting lists etc or the beds on the corridors.
However, it is constantly improving and trying to reach a better standard.

Bakery? NO. - Computer Technician.
And your welcome to have a laugh. If JFK can be a donut, I can be a Windbeutel (Doughbag), being German and all. However, this is all I want to publicly admit in the matter of the name choosing me.
