My main is a level 48 night elf hunter on Medivh (a PvE server). Until they implemented the new honor system, I had done very little PvP. Last night, my husband (Ilarg, lvl 48 night elf rogue) and I joined a raid on Tarren Mill’s and had a blast. I got 83 honorable kills and 1 dishonorable kill last night. I haven’t turned my PvP flag off in days.
Well, if I were higher level (my highest character is 34) I would be a lot happier. With no dishonor penalties, there’s nothing stopping a level 60 from one hit killing me during a raid. It costs them nothing. This is on a PVE server, so I rarely flag. I did a raid in Tarren Mill and we Horde held off the Alliance (who outnumber us at least 2 to 1), but I got killed in one shot many many many times mostly by Paladins, who simply go immune when they start getting hit.
I only play a few hours three times a week, so I will never ever get rank, even if I PK every time I play and never quest again. That’s frustrating.
Also, it should have been implemented the way it was said in the manual, not some other way they thought of later. Casual gamers have no chance with this system, and Battlegrounds is going to be a complete joke. They actually think that implementing Battlegrounds with the next patch will “stop the constant raiding on Tarren Mill and other areas”. Yeah, because people LIKE to play fair! HA!
The problem is that it’s anything but “honorable”. The system encourages ganking- the best way to rank up the kills is to camp the gryphon landing points and the instance exits, and jump people as they’re still loading.
A true “honor system” would only reward honor points for duels against the enemy. Normal fighting shouldn’t give honor points- heck, if anything, it should give dishonor points more readily.
Mass warfare should be its own reward. Dueling should be considered honorable fighting.
I haven’t tried PvP yet on my server (a PvE server) since my oldest is a 31 warrior.
The first day I was kinda pissed with the lag and the facvt that all my quest giveres were dead.
Now it seems the lag is calmed (except right next to the battles) and my quest givers live longer. I have no issues with it and maybe one day when i grow up I can kill me some alliance.
A mixed bag really. I play as Lochdale (Level 45 Orc Hunter) on Shattered Hand which is a pvp server.
I am a solo player almost exclusively. I have done one instance (Uldaman) and that was just to get a gun from one minor boss.
The systems encourages ganking. That is, a level 50 will not dismount and kill a level 38 whereas in the past they may have just galloped past. That isn’t good. Ashenvale has become a no-go area for most horde players in their mid-20s.
It’s also highlighted just how powerful rogues are. They can one-shot most cloth wearers and stun-kill most mail wearers in 2-3 shots. Unless you get the jump on them they are nearly unbeatable.
Lastly, while it is definitely tougher playing as the horde, it’s great having all those alliance targets!
I would like to see a more fully-fleshed dishonor system, but it’ll be tough to get it right. After all, what if that lvl 38 is rampaging through a lowbie area and the only one around is a lvl 60? Should he stand by, yelling, “Can’t kill him. Don’t want a DK. Need a lower level character to come take him out.” Also, in raid vs. raid fighting, like we were doing last night, a low level guy can cause quite a bit of damage to the higher level guys and shouldn’t be ignored (not to mention with all that red, it’s difficult to see who is what level.) Most of the horde players were lvl 60s, and I was still a threat to them, with my traps and stings.
I do think Battlegrounds will help eliminate some of the raids on the more popular towns, because there will be more to do in BG. By the time the patch is released, I hope to be into my 50s.
I love PvP on the PvE servers. If you’re trying to quest in a dangerous area, you don’t have to worry about being ganked (too much), so long as you turn your flag off.
I personally don’t care for it but then again, I’ve never been much of a PvPer in the first place. I have a level 60 NE rogue on Argent Dawn and sure, I could go out and start jumping on horde but to me, it’s just pointless. This new system has simply encouraged mindless ganking without reason or interaction. (Before anyone jumps on me, I’d like to point out that Argent Dawn is a roleplay server hence my comment about interaction…though there is admittedly very little RP to be found but that’s another topic…) So you get a spiffy little military title before your name based on your number of kills or what have you. Big deal. Maybe there’s more benefit from doing this. I don’t know.
As stated above, I think there is very little that’s “honorable” about this system. But then again, I’m just a cranky old broad.
I have to agree with a couple of posters here. I’m not much for PvP, but think honorable kills should be based on duels. I don’t see the benefit in any of this either other than a rank with some points.
I believe it also just leads to ganking. There are times when all I want to do is complete a quest; not worry about some player or many players trying to come in and kill me. But, then again, that’s just me and maybe I’m a cranky old broad too.
This sounds like it’s pretty cool. I’ll definitly be joining the WoW crowd after finals/papers are turned in/graded. I have this itch to get it now, but I know how addicting it will be for me and I can’t try to fight that and write papers at the same time.
I’ve tried it once, and my poor computer (2.5 GH with 512 MB memory and a GeForce 5600) simply couldn’t bear the strain. I saw:

I’ve not tried it again. Hopefully battlegrounds will ease the strain.

Maybe we should start a guild. The Cranky Old Broads. Don’t mess with us.
Left Hand of Dorkness, I was signed up for the Alpha/Beta testing of this game way back when but was unable to play because of my crappy computer so I know exactly what you’re going through. Fortunately, I was able to get an awesome gaming system so most of the issues are gone (except for lag in Iron Forge. I’m not sure that’s ever going to change).
That’s really the only thing that’s “bad” about the game as far as performance. It’s vitually unplayable if you don’t have a computer system with lots of memory, speed and a great video card.
Pffft. The game runs fine on my system, it’s a PIII 800mhz with 640 mb RAM. The video card is new, I had to buy it for the game, I think it’s a nVidea 5200 or something lke that, but I don’t have many problems playing anywhere except LagForge.
My computer, the sucky crap that it is, has two 256MB sticks and only two slots for memory. Upgrading the memory would require purchasing 2 512 sticks, and that’s just more than I can afford at the moment.
(At some point I need to format the drive and reinstall: despite running multiple spyware programs and Norton, I’ve got some very wonky Internet issues that may be related to unpleasant programs running in the background, and that may be responsible for some of the performance issues with the game.)
sighs I can’t wait to get to WoW playable on my computer. I’m sharing an account right now, and I have to play on the other guys computer because mine SUCKS (on the login screen the mouse lags slightly. It’s that bad) I’m getting more RAM for it and that should hopefully get it playable (I have 224Mb right now–don’t ask, I’m not sure why either, as there’s only one stick in it currently)–unfortunately there isn’t much else I can do short of selling this computer and buying a desktop. A friend said he could build me a decent gaming system cheap, but at the moment I don’t want to get rid of my laptop.
Alright, now on to the actual topic. I don’t care much for the honour system, though really I don’t care much for PvP period, hence why I’m on a PvE server. My highest char is a 40 mage, and it can be hard to keep her alive in PvP, especially since there’s usually at least one Horde player in the 50s hanging around (I’m in Stranglethorn Vale ATM). I don’t care at all for mindless killing, which is really all PvP is to me, even with honour. Battlegrounds could be fun once it comes in, though it’ll be a while before I can take part.
