My father in law never refered to me by name. I was always “That long haired S.O.B. my daughter married.” Once my boss sent a guy to work with me. After a couple of days, the guy told my boss “If I have to work with that crazy, long haired S.O.B. again, I quit!” (he did)
When it came time to decide on a screen name for my first online account (AOL) I chose longhair. It required some numbers. Sunflower and I were married in 1975. THus, longhair75 became my handle.
A lot of people think my user name has dirty connotations. It actually doesn’t although I can see why people think that way. It was a name my best friend sometimes called me in high school for some unknown reason. As far as I can tell, the name Shagnasty is a term that filtered down into the South by immigrants from the British Isles. I don’t know the origin beyond that.
Wow. I… I never knew… hits YouTube
In other news, I’m waiting for** pseudotron ruber ruber **to show up. I think that username is the most perplexing ever, for me.
My name was voted upon in a series of two SDMB thread. The first was to get 10 or so choices and the second was a vote. It was inspired by friend Elendil’s Heir name change.
I collect cows. I’ve been told my room has more cows than Vermont. I wanted a username to reflect an interest. Naturally, looking around I was faced with all things bovine and thought of “holy cow”. I didn’t want that as my name so I dropped a few letters and settled on hocow.
I admired Baldwin IV, the leper king of Jerusalem. I doubt if any monarch has ever had more pains in the ass to deal with in such a short life. (No jokes about Edward II, please.)
Okay, I edited that particular entry, and someone completely deleted my reference
to the old Elmer Fudd & the elves cartoon (where he gives the elves a lecture on
capitalism). Thought it had to be a 100% chance that Parker and Stone had seen
that cartoon and it served as an inspiration for their ep. Stupid ignorant wiki editors…
Anyway in my case I am named after a character from the Incal graphic novels, and
because well I’m a fool in some ways (the good ways ).
My new one I owe to a random dude at school. I feel, to say the least, very very strongly about my University. My feelings toward UCLA are bound up with prophecy* (I share a birthday with fellow transfer student James Dean [him 2/8/31 - me 2/8/81] and also have a strong affinity for motorcycles [hence my last username, The Sausage Creature, after an essay of the same name by the late great Hunter S. Thompson], toil (dropped out in ninth grade, busted my ass to get here), disappointment (got accepted two years ago but had to withdraw), and gratefulness (accepted again with a full ride). So of course, when Blue and Gold Week comes (or Beat 'SC Week, to those of us In The Know ;)) I sport full colors. These past several years, I watched every UCLA-USC game, and was disappointed every time. But I knew, I mean, I just knew my boys were waiting for me to be there with them when they won.
So one day I’m sitting outside Ackerman waiting for the vanpool, with my blue and gold backpack (worn daily) with a pennant attached, my big blue bodacious satin UCLA coat, and my UCLA Girls ROCK! T-shirt, when Random Dude came up behind me - “Let’s ask Queen Bruin right there. Hey Queen Bruin, are we gonna win this weekend?”
I didn’t miss a beat. “You bet your sweet ass we will!” And I was right.
*not really, but I think it’s pretty damn cool. Also share BDay with fellow Bruin composer John Williams - born just one year from James Dean.
“Caz” is a common nickname for women named Carol (or Karen, or Catherine, etc) here in Australia.
When I was a child, my nickname started out as Caz which got dressed up as Cazzle, did a turn as Cazzle-Dazzle before falling out of favour. Fifteen years later I started calling myself Caz on the internet but once when it was taken I used my middle initial “L” to make it unique, and thus Cazzle was reborn.
Nothing came to mind, so I started looking at my desk. “PowerBook G4” and “Pencil” didn’t seem like very good names, so now I’m named after my Sanders power supply.
