So I cracked my skull open today...

Well, not really my skull, but I did hurt myself on my head.

The scenario:

My GF and a friend of mine went to the river to cool off today. Well, we swam just fine, and started the walk back to the car. The spot we parked was up a steep bank, and for some reason (possibly to help people climb, but more likely cause it was old and errodded away) a rusty pipe was sticking horizntally out of the hillside. Well, I guess it was my fault for looking down as I walked, cause before I knew it…BLAM! Rusty pipe to the head! It hurt like HELL for about five minutes, then the pain subsided. The blood, however, decided that it liked to stay. And stay it did…for half an hour. My hair was caked in blood, it was running down my forehead, and this was just in the few minutes it took us to get back home. When I arrived, the GF (who is a certified life guard and first aid person :)) took a peak. It’s only a small cut, but it wasn’t a nice, straight, clean slice. It was all jagged and crap. She cleaned it out with some antiseptic and gave me a paper towel to hold on my head. Sheesh.

Well, I’m all better now. No more bleeding, and I washed my hair to get out all the blood (I didn’t dare do it until a few hours had passed, for fear of re-opening the wound.) I’ll probably wake up with a headache tomorrow but oh well. I’m going into work late tomorrow anyways. ( Partly because of this and partly because I have nothing to do.)

And for all those who are thinking this: Yes, I am up to date on my tetnis shot. (I had it about six years ago, and unless I’m mistaken they are good for ten, right?)

Ouch :o

hope your g/f remembered to give you the time honoured cure for all ouchies and kissed it better

I’d call your doctor about the tetanus thing if I were you…I had stitches a few years back and it had been five years since my last tetanus shot, and he gave me another one “just to be on the safe side”.

Scalp wounds commonly bleed like a sunnuvabitch. IIRC it has to do with more blood needed up there for temp regulation, or some other type Jazz.

If you cut yourself with anything rusty, it’s always wise to ask yourself “self, when was my last tetanus shot?”

bouv, if you were where I think you were, you got off easy. It was “the gorge” right?

When I was your age I got a danged 12-penny nail in my leg when I jumped into the upper pool.

IIRC, tetanus shots are good for about ten years. If you’re getting close to that you might want to get a booster.

So did your brains come out or did you just cut the skin on your head?

Yep I feel you pain. I cut my palm this weekend on some rusty ass thing, and the blood was gushing pretty nice. I went to the ER and did the tetanus shot thing (hadn’t had one in bout 15 years or so).

Hope your noggin is feeling better.

Umm…yeah, it might have been “The Gorge”, Exgineer. A waterfall flows down through some rocks, and makes a smaller pool up near where it comes out, and a large one at the bottom. I swam in the upper pool, cause A) Climbing the rocks to get there is fun and B) The cops are less likely to see you there (since it is illegal to swim there for some reason.) I didn’t realize you knew where I lived…though I do mention it many times, and you live in Albany, so I’m not that surpised you know the area.

Anyways, all seems fine now. I took a day off of work (not really because of the wound, I just didn’t want to go.) It only hurts now if I touch it, and I have noticed that I touch the top of my head a lot more than I would have thought.

Yeah, they always tell you when you have kids that head wounds bleed. I never really thought about that, until my daughter got a 1/8 inch long cut on her head and bled enough to completely soak two bath towels. I was completely resigned to the fact that my child was obviously going to be brain-damaged at best, because anything that bloody simply must be close to fatal. When I finally found the actual cut, I fainted from relief.

Feel better, buddy!

I’ve had stitches five times in my life, ALL on my head and face, and I can certify that head wounds bleed like hell. There are more blood vessels in the head to supply the brain, and this does lead to a lot of heat loss (remember Mom saying, “Wear a hat!”).

So keep it clean, get a tetanus booster, and have your g/f check it now and then for infection. And be glad you didn’t need stitches.
