For the last six years I’ve been with my company (of nearly nine), I’ve had the distinct priviledge of being part time and telecommuting. My afternoons were spent on my writing. I only have to go into the office every other Friday. Well, all good things must come to an end, and last week my manager informed me that the decision was made that the position needed a full time, in-office employee. The job was mine if I wanted it.
I discussed it over with my husband, and together we decided that since what I really want to do is be a full time novelist, I should see if I have the dedication to do it. I’m going to give it a three-month trial. I have no illusions about this. I’ve been writing for seven or eight years, been paid for about five of those, and I know that even if I sold a novel today, I wouldn’t see any money for about a year, and I wouldn’t see a livable wage for even longer. But we can live comfortably on his salary, so long as we watch our spending (no more $10/lb cheeses from CostCo).
So most likely, I’ll be returning to the work force eventually. But I want to give this a try, and it keeps me from having to quit my existing job.
If anyone is looking for a tech (programming) position in a Fortune 500 company in Fort Worth, TX, email me for details. (There’s another full time position already open, so they’ll be looking for two people.) I have a great manager.
