So...I'm in Virginia.

Following the final formulation of a half-assed plan that we at last brought together, Roland Orzabal picked me up Tuesday morning and brought me to Roanoke. My parents had been fairly confused by the entire moving plan to start with, but they did manage to behave themselves. The trip was fairly uneventful. It was fortunately light on the awkward silences and fairly heavy on the amusement and talking about random whatever that Roland and I tend to do. I’ve only been here for a couple of days. I think I like it so far. It’s rather pretty and there is actual stuff to do here, but I don’t think I’ll really feel settled in until I have a more permanent arrangement going. Right now, it feels like a peculiar kind of vacation. **Roland ** has been terrific, and I’ve met three friends of his so far, who were cool. Despite the fact that I’m a bit rootless at the moment, I feel a lot better than I did. I think it’s all going to be OK.

What’s the backstory to all this? Is there another thread?

You know, I just have to comment, Roland Orzabal is the greatest name I’ve ever heard.

No backstory, really, astro. There’s not a lot more to the story than that. I wanted to leave Louisiana and was encountering some difficulties, so Roland helped me out.

Welcome to the New River Valley! I’m a hop, jump, and a skip down 81 in Radford, VA, enrolled in the university. Who’s up for a SW-VA Doperfest?

Just thought I’d check in here; somehow I knew you’d have a thread on this. Care to share with us some of the more amusing moments from the trip?

Hey, I’m originally from Radford myself; living in Raleigh at the moment, but I’m back in town for visits pretty often. I might be up for a get together if others are as well.

Ee-yup, here we be. Not a bad trip, though I don’t recommend doing it all in one go, as we were intrepid enough to attempt.

Good to know ya, MissMossie and Cabbage; I was wondering if we had any other SoVa Dopers about. I was actually talking to Telperien earlier about trying to get some kind of a shindig together for this general area, since it looks like I probably won’t be able to make Gettysdope this year. MissMossie, I usually seem to find myself in Blacksburg at least once a week, so maybe the three of us can meet up sometime for lunch or something.

I’ll leave any details of our little adventure and/or the results thereof for Telperien to provide as she wishes; it’s her story, really. I’m just the guy who happens to be driving during most of it.

Thanks. Wish I could take credit for it, but I’m afraid that honor must go to this guy.* As for me, the real-life name is Ian; other sometime-aliases include Beefman the Omnipotent and Welcome Conbracos.

*Yay. More people that don’t automatically see my posts and immediately think “oh yeah, that Tears For Fears dude”. This is a pleasing trend.

Hmm, amusing moments? I don’t know. I did spend a good portion of the time smiling or laughing, but I probably spent about an equal time wearing my standard neutral expression which apparently still looks like I’m pissed off. It was rather funny when the road signs started saying, “Roanoke–some number of miles,” as that made me really nervous. And there was much babbling from me about the hills.

So far, though, nothing has happened now that I’m here, except that I, um, fell down. However, I never feel truly at home somewhere until I end up falling down there, so no worries. My right ankle is still a bit swollen and the bruises are fabulous, but other than that, I’m all right.
