He’s leaving Criminal Minds, a hit show, after two seasons (link), which he’d done to CBS before, with Chicago Hope). They’re saying it’s not about money, but don’t want to say what it is about.
Anyone know any gossip about him?

Criminal Minds is probably in my top five for favorite shows, but really can’t say I care too much about this. When I first read this early in the week, my initial reaction was “Yeah, and?”. There are at three characters far more interesting than Gideon.
Well, I know his health has not been great over the last few years…he had prostate cancer, and has had to have corneal implants because of some eye disease. As far as I know, both of those problems were in the past, but maybe not. I certainly hope he’s ok…I’m a big fan.
I’m going to go with health. Shooting a television series wears away at even the healthiest actors.

I liked Jason Gideon and hoped the last episode of last season wasn’t the beginning of a reason for him to leave. I love Mandy Patinkin - I have Elmo Goes to Grouchland and he’s funny in that as well - he’s a singing menace to all the grouches in Grouchland.
Maybe he heard my complaints and has decided to join the cast of the new Dead Like Me movie.
The article I read on the matter indicated there was a suspicion that his character was going to be written off the show and he decided to beat 'em to the punch.
no matter how he leaves, I hope he leaves ‘well’ - if they do something stupid with it, it will piss me off to no end… his ‘sage’ charector on the show for me is one of the big drawing points, but not the ‘end all’ - the show can move on without any single charector, but I want them to do it ‘right’.
and, FTR, I have no idea what ‘right’ is, I’ll know it when I see it.

ETS: just read the linked article - sounds like he wont be in S3 at all… so it will be interesting what the writers do at the beginning - I could see his char taking a break after the events with that last serial.
He’ll be in at least one episode, because an episode from Season 2 was postponed for having a plot similar to the Virginia Tech massacre.
I think a great exit would be for him to …
fall on his sword in order to save the job of Hotchner, who as we learned is being targeted for dismissal
… but he would need to come back for at least a handful of episodes to let it play out.

This link doesn’t work for me, but according to wikipedia,, the movie was greenlit in April, and Patinkin will not reprise the role of Rube, which really sucks. Although they are recasting Daisy, thankfully. I couldn’t stand that actress!
Actually, what we need is for a plotline to emerge on how he got started in the BAU. One that reveals how his father was murdered when Jason was in his teens, and how the killer was never found, thus sparking an interest in law enforcement in young Jason. And hey, maybe they could have him finally track down his father’s killer.
Don’t know what he’d have to say to him, though.
She grew on me in the second season.
That said I don’t mind writing her out, but I can’t stand recasts. Just replace her with a different character a la Daisy replacing Rebecca Gayheart’s character in the first place. Recasting is just horribly lazy IMO.
