Mike Myers has (or had) a reputation for being an insufferable dick on set. He’s also been on SNL a few times in the past few weeks as Elon Musk.
I’m to understand that Lorne Michaels’ patience for fools can most charitably be described as limited. And of course, unless they signed NDA’s, the current cast members would be spilling the tea on daytime talk shows.
So any word on whether or not Myers is still a diva?
One weird thing I’ve noticed in recent eps of SNL in which he plays Elon, at the end, when everyon chats and hugs, generally MM seems to be kinda standing there alone, while everyone around him chats and hugs. Just seems odd.
I met Meyers a few years ago in a client / service provider scenario. He was under no obligation to interact with me at all, and was mostly quiet. But he was polite and made a point of calling my attention to something he found amusing. If it ever turns up in a sketch or movie I’ll have a good story.
The new biography of Lorne Michaels doesn’t say anything bad about Myers. To the contrary, Michaels seemed to behave badly toward Myers during the making of Wayne’s World. Michaels championed it because he wanted his production company to have an SNL film of its own, but he put down Myers creative ideas all the way through, and kept dictating decisions while making the sequel. Maybe that’s why Myers insisted on control on later movies.
I like to think MM isn’t truly a dick but took up some dickishness with the pressures of fame at the height of Austin Powers. We didn’t hear about it during Wayne’s World, for example.
He was also a producer of the AP films - I suppose that could have contributed to it. Not everyone can tale the stress of both acting and producing, and comedians are notoriously insecure to begin with.
Apparently there was at least some friction between him and Dana Carvey, because he had originally envisioned a much smaller role for Garth in the movie.
And director Penelope Spheeris refused to return for the sequel because of on-set friction with Myers, including an incident when he pitched a fit because Craft Services didn’t have margarine for his bagel.
I kinda feel the bar for celebrity dickishness has gone up significantly in recent years. Like if he’s just a common or garden dickhead, not a hideous sexual predator or a fascist, or both, then meh whatever
Honestly who knows. .. Yes, he was a total dick for a while. Generally after he ceased having the ability to make people laugh anymore. . He was more like a drunk. . just angry at the world in general.
Perhaps he has mellowed out since then. . maybe the loss of fame and fortune have woke him up to the reality that being a dick, is well, just being a dick. Treat people well, and you don’t have that problem. The dude is 61 years old now. He is not the cute little rebel canadian he was back during SNL and Waynes world.
There is an old discussion about him on Reddit. . it is two years old, but there are some interesting points mentioned and discussed. The discussion is here:
Or he may have become more of an Ass today than he was in years past. . sometimes people change. . for the worse instead of the better. . It would not be the first time a famous person has totally pissed off their former supporters.
Personally, he was funny in years past. Today not so much. I don’t live somewhere that I am likely to ever run into the guy, so I honestly don’t care.
If it’s any consolation, Myers was a guest on Carvey’s and David Spade’s ‘Fly on the Wall’ podcast a year or two ago, and if I recall it was a pleasant, genial conversation, so if there was friction between them at some point it seems to have been smoothed over.
Yea, I won’t defend any shittiness toward Dana Carvey, he seems like a genuine sweetheart. I’m a fan of all these guys (you too, Spade!), I wish Mike wasn’t the dick of the group.
