Anyone else watching?
So far they’ve done Wayne’s World (WITH MIKE MYERS ZOMG) and Church Chat, and even through my haze of 80s nostalgia that is probably influencing my judgment, I thought both were actually pretty funny.
I am excited.

The audience seemed to love Jon Lovitz. AT first, I’d forgotten who the host was, and thought they were showing an old one!
I actually enjoyed Beiber.
It’s weak in the writing department. Carvey still projects energy, but he has had 17 years to write a good Church Lady sketch and it was crap. The three sluts are the Kardashians? How about Lohan, Hilton and Spears? That would have been great.
Man, I hate to be that guy in the SNL thread, but there isn’t much charitable to say about this week’s show. Wayne’s World was a welcome blast from the past, and both Meyers and Carvey did well Garth is supposed to be nervous, so any real nervousness that was present worked. Carvey DID seem nervous during the monologue, and Jon Lovitz saved it just by showing up, (audience loved it) though he didn’t do much. That new (to me) guy I don’t yet know the name of did a great Eddie Murphy and I want to see more of that. Everything else left me flat.
I thought it was a pretty decent show. The Room Mate skit with Andy Samburg was pretty cute. The kiddie pageant not very. Linkin Park’s second song was pretty impressive for a live performance.
The new guy is Jay Pharoah and his Eddie Murphy is superb.
I only saw Wayne’s World and the Church Lady.
I thought both were hilarious.
Mike Myers and Dana Carvey looked the same as 20 years ago!
Dana Carvey is looking amazing. The last time I saw him was on a late-night talk show, not too long after his heart surgery, and he looked like sheer hell at the time. He seems to have really bounced back from that.
The Wayne’s World and Church Lady skits were great, in my opinion. The celebrity hotline skit was great, too. Armisen’s Ice-T impersonation was dead-on, as was Pharoah’s Murphy (as usual). Weekend Update was OK. Most of the skits after WU were disappointing at best, although Carvey’s Regis Philbin was pretty good. (Actually that might have been pre-WU, but my point stands.)
Overall I’m glad I tuned in.
I enjoyed the show. Even Bieber. I agree that Carvey and Meyers look great.
I never knew that annoying song they keep playing on my radio station is Linkin Park. Glad that now I can qualify my dislike
Has SNL ever broadcast a band’s performance in black and white before?
The James Franco bit on WU was great because it’s true. Check him out on The Daily Show.
I thought the show was much better than average. Sure, there were a couple of lousy skits, but there always are. But there were also a handful of skits that were really good, and for SNL that’s about the best you can usually hope for.
Carvey looked great. That opening Wayne’s World looked like it fell right out of a show from the 1990’s.
Agreed; that was great.
But SNL has done the Kardashians before. The characters are part of the inventory now, ready to be plugged into any sketch.
As much as I loathe the very concept of Justin Bieber, I have to admit he’s actually a pretty good little actor considering that’s not even his area. And at least he’s not a pseudo celebrity like the Kardashians (who I understand don’t like the SNL sketches).
I wondered at first if the Wayne’s World sketch was recorded separately because it surprised that Mike Myers wasn’t in any other sketch, though of course neither was Lovitz. And one of Carvey’s sons looks just like him (shown in the end credits).
Speaking of Jon Lovitz, some magazine article I read recently mentioned that he paid $100,000 for a painting at a charity auction. I wonder sometimes how actors like him- who doesn’t work often- have that kind of money- whether it’s just good investments or if they inherited money. His wiki says he owns two comedy clubs, but things like that can be an asset or a liability.
He probably just kept his money he earned when he was more famous. Smart move, actually.
BTW, what happened to Dana Carvey? Supposedly he was considered “Most Likely to Succeed” of those from his generation of SNL performers. But aside from a comedy series, the movies Clean Slate and The Master of Disguise (and his appearances in the Wayne’s World movies), his career never really took off. Any idea why? And why was he on SNL last night? Usually people go on the show to promote an upcoming project, but he didn’t mention anything.
He’s had some serious health problems. He had open-heart surgery (which was botched) and then had to have several more surgeries to correct the problems.
His movie career never really went anywhere, but I highly recommend his standup specials. Very good stuff.
Wikipedia also shows he’s been working steadily since 1986 with movies and TV (don’t forget his stint on Newsradio). He also was the voice of Subway for a while.
I suspect Lovitz just does what most of us think we’d do if we had a good chunk of celebrity cash - spend wisely.
Maybe it’s just me but the sound mix on the musical numbers (this week and the last few shows I can recall) seems off in that the vocals are not loud enough compared to the rest. It’s distracting.
