I think you’re overestimating. Six years, maybe. 10 years ago he hadn’t even been sworn in as governor of Massachusetts yet.
OH, that’s what we needed… a leader of the free world who is pushed around by his wife and kid. Wonder if they ran Baine Capital too? Now the truth comes out, Mittens is a kept man and a pretty face for the REAL power house… Mrs Mittens. Bet Mormons will have a fit to learn that she’s wearing the pants in that family.
If there’s a way to spin this, I’m sure Fox is on it. “Yeah, good job Obama for beating a man who didn’t want to run. And he still got 47%! Shows what a horrible president he is!”
If Mitt had any sense he would have shoved Tagg into the pet carrier on the roof of the car, if only because his name could make him mistaken for the family pet.
His only goal for being governor was to build his resume to run for president.
I understand that, but he wasn’t running for president at the time in any reasonable sense. He started campaigning in 2006 or 2007.
“Man! I gotta do this suckass job for, like, minimum wage, for four flippin’ years, just so I can get a line on my resume that qualifies me to run for President. Don’t anyone ever tell me I didn’t pay my dues to get the gig I want!”
He looked sick of the whole mess by September.
I wouldn’t say that. He looked quite perky in the first Presidential debate, for instance, and that was on Oct. 3.
That’s because, at the first debate, he gave up the facade and came out as the Progressive he has always been.

Both, I should think. ![]()
Personally, I’ve grown tired of this piling-on about Romney running a terrible campaign. I don’t think his campaign was the flaming turd that people like to call it hear days: despite the news coverage of Orca, the die was cast well before Election Day turnout would change anything. Romney’s ad buys could have been smarter, and that’s a fair criticism.
I think the main problem with Romney’s campaign was that he was running as the standard-bearer for a party that has gone completely schitzo: Dick Lugar isn’t a real conservative, but Sarah Palin is a real leader! How the hell do you hold a party like that together and get the votes of moderates who realize how insane the party has become? It is mission impossible, but Romney did a decent job of holding that all together.
You want to see real 2012 campaign disasters? Look at Akin and Mourdock. Those are actual examples of bad campaigns.
If it is true that Romney was certain he was going to win up to late into the evening of election day, then his campaign was utterly incompetent and living in the conservative Fox-generated reality bubble.
It may well have been he said something to this effect early in the day so as not to dishearten the troops, but all the stories I’ve seen since have claimed the same – he was utterly confident of his victory and utterly shocked when it didn’t happen.
I don’t think Romney’s campaigning was all that terrible although it had a ton of cringe-worthy moments. Romney as a candidate who actually seemed to care was one of the worst I think I’ll ever see in my life. But I’m young, so who knows. But honestly, Romney was a terrible, terrible candidate for president from almost any angle you look at it.
With equal ambiguity I’d say we can all be glad for that.
But you know for damn sure it’s an insult!
Well, not really. They garnered a significant percentage of the vote despite saying some of the dumbest things any candidate for elective office has in years. Thus, their campaigns were tremendously successful. Those are actual examples of bad candidates.
I agree that Romney didn’t run a terrible campaign, though. He didn’t say anything too dumb (except the 47% thing, which I’m not convinced made a great deal of difference). He was defeated by bad math and a worse overall Republican narrative (vote for us and we’ll lower taxes!)
He made some blunders and I think he said some stupid things beyond the 47% quip, but overall he did more or less what you would have expected the Republican candidate to do in his situation. But I do think it’s about time for Democrats to let go of Romney already. He lost decisively, every Republican in the country has spit on his grave, and he’ll never run for office again. Let him retire with his riches and houses and hundreds of millions and his complaints and focus on the situation at hand.
Eh? We’re talking about him because his son (who I assume is not a Democrat) talked to the press about him. What would you expect Democrats to say? “He didn’t want to be President? Really? Well, lucky him!”
That was intended as a general comment, not a response to this specific story. There’s still plenty of snarking on Romney here - not that the guy didn’t do anything to deserve it, but the corpse is pretty well picked clean.
