So, my car was just "hit and run". Whats my checklist?

I was stopped at a light in the left lane of a two lane road.
There was a car in front of me also stopped,

The light turned green. The cars on my right started to move. My lan edid not; the car in front of me was turning left.
One car, a large SUV driven by a Caucasian Male 20-30, seemed upset with the car in front of him, a heavy smoker with smoke pouring out of his window, and he was beeping his horn at the smoker.
And then he sideswiped my car with his SUV.
He turned back to look at me, and I got a good look at him and I memorized his SUVs plate number.
He knew he hit me. He turned to stare at me. But he didn’t even slow down, let alone stop.

My car is damaged, my back & neck hurt. I filed a police report. I gave plate#, description of the driver, description of the SUV to the cop.
A warrant for arrest for “Felony Hit And Run” is likely in the works as we speak.

What else can I do?

What would you do?

  1. Conform you were wise enough to purchase UIM insurance
  2. Notify your insurer.
  3. Optional. Contact attorney

Go to the hospital to have your neck and back looked at.

I would consider contacting an attorney to be more necessary than optional.

This happened to me. The cops will send you a letter or form asking you if you want to press charges. UP to you if you do or not. Other than that, it’s between you and the insurance company unless you are injured and want to call a lawyer.

I was driving a rental car on the highway, got sideswiped (grazed is a better word) by another car. Followed the driver, got car description, license, but he never stopped. I finally found a place to pull off, looked at the car and saw the only damage was that kind of foggy glaze that can be buffed out. Called the cops, filed a report. Filed another report with my insurance company and then with the rental company. My insurance company called me a few weeks later and said the other car had insurance for 30 days, long enough to get it registered, but let it lapse. And it was a fake name too. I think it may have been a fake address as well.

It’s been *almost a year and the rental company never stuck me with a bill *so I guess they either lost the paperwork, or just decided it wasn’t worth it for the fogged up paint job. My insurance company said “If they don’t call in 60 days, they’ll probably never call.”

Take photos and document. It sounds like you’ve done the right things so far.

Copy the contents of your dashcam to your HDD and send them to the police and your insurers. You do have a dashcam, don’t you?
