So my wife and I need a new video game...

We’re quite a bit behind on games and gaming systems. We’re aware of it.

Here is what we’ve played recently. We have a Gamecube(yes, we love Zelda). Anyway, we’re looking for a new game and the Straight Dope has been a great source for recommendations.

We also have a Game Boy Advance

Here is what we’ve played recently.

  1. Zelda: Wind Waker

  2. Zelda: Twilight Princess

  3. Beyond Good and Evil

  4. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

  5. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

  6. Prince of Persia: Two Thrones

  7. Zelda: Minish Cap

  8. Zelda: Link to the Past

We also like adventure games, but have played most of the famous and popular ones.

We like the dungeons in Zelda and the puzzles of Prince of Persia more than the fighting. For example, I set Prince of Persia to easy because we focus mainly on the platforming aspect of the game.

Any recommendations?

Okay, sticking with the Gamecube the obvious one to bring up is Eternal Darkness. If you like adventure games then this is the one to go with. Also Resident Evil 4 is fun even if you didn’t like the earlier Resident Evil games. Also since you clearly like Zelda you might be interested in Zelda: Four Swords.

Does Zelda: Four Swords have a single player quest?

Just get a Wii. Really. Zelda’s awesome on it.

Mrs. Mercotan and I love ours. Uberbowling is our favorite ‘together’ game right now. That’s the practice bowling game where you get 10 balls, one per frames, and you start with 10 pins, then add on another back row of pins with each new frame. Double points for strikes.

The Gamecube has one of the best versions of Resident Evil 4 out there. It’s a fun, cinematic game and it’s not too difficult.

And then get Guitar Hero III.

No, get a Wii, then Super Mario Galaxy. It even has a simple, but cool co-op mode so you two can play through the single-player adventure together. It’s also the best reviewed game of the year (and the best reviewed game ever, according to metacritic.com)

My understanding is yes, but I haven’t played it. I just thought it was an obvious oversight on your Zelda dominated list.

I’m going to echo the recommendation that you get a Wii. It’s not terribly expensive, $250, and then you can get:

  1. Zelda: Twilight Princess
  2. Super Mario Galaxy
  3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, if you like the Metroid games

and more. You should also pick up Eternal Darkness and you can play that on your Wii (with a gamecube controller) too!

Yeah, get a Wii.

In addition to what people have suggested, you and your wife will probably like Zack & Wiki. There’s also an upcoming Wii port of Okami, which is very Zelda-esque (and gorgeous besides).

Super Paper Mario is pretty fun. It’s a Mario game and an RPG at the same time. Lots of fun.

Good suggestion! Super Paper Mario is very Zelda-like.

While we’re talkin’ Wii, toss Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree on the list as a good husband/wife game. It’s an iq test type game where you have to complete little tasks to earn points. I think you can see examples of the gameplay at Nintendo.com (I can’t get there from work to find an exact link). Hopefully it’s a tad less than $50 by now, as it’s not quite worth that, but my wife and I have had fun playing it against each other many times. It’s great at parties too, where up to eight players can participate (taking turns).

I’ll also second Okami, which was a great game after the way-too-long intro. I liked it better than Zelda TP actually.

And yes, get Super Mario Galaxy, as if you need me to tell you that. :stuck_out_tongue:

Back to Gamecube, do you like strategy games? If so, see if you can track down a copy of Fire Emblem (subtitled Dawn of Radience I think). It’s a tactical RPG with a great story and soundtrack. It’s a turn-based game played on a grid, like a fancy game of chess. If you’ve played either of the Advance Wars games on the GBA you’ll know what you’re in for (same type of game from the same developer). If you haven’t, there’s two more recommendations!

Ivylad and I like playing **Sid Meier’s Pirates ** on the computer. He does the actual driving, I sit there with the guide and the map and keep track of his quests and help him figure out the clues to the treasure.
