Which Wii games should I buy?

My SO just got a Wii and needs some games. He’s rented a few and here’s what he likes/dislikes:

Likes
Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
Sports like tennis, golf, fishing (though I am doubtful as to how good full games can actually be)
Manhunt (though he says it’s a bit difficult)
Mario Party (I think this is the one. It has a bunch of games)

Dislikes
Super Monkey ball. Intensely.
Most first-person shooter games with overly complicated mazes and tasks, or any game where dying is easy and sends you back to the beginning

Any ideas? We’ve checked out Cooking Mama and the operating room one online, but they look a little simple. Do they get more exciting than just slicing and dicing?

Currently enjoying Paper Mario. We almost finished Zelda: Twilight Princess, but the lost our saved games. It was good until then.

How do you lose your saved games on a Wii? If I play a long game like Zelda, I don’t want to end up having to replay a bunch.

-Joe

Buy Mario Galaxy. Immediately.

The operating room game is Trauma Center: Second Opinion. It’s sort of an arcade-y game in that it depends more on quick reflexes than complex puzzle solving. It also gets excruciatingly difficult. I love that sort of game, but your mileage may vary.

Super Paper Mario was very clever and enjoyable. It’s also the type of game you’re likely to play once and then never put in your Wii again, so you could trade it into Gamestop or something.

Forgot to mention: Sonic and the Secret Rings is a very good game, although the controls will take some getting used to.

But really. Mario Galaxy.

We visited my brother last spring and spent most of the time playing Rayman: Raving Rabbids on his Wii. That was lots of fun, and the sequel just came out. It has lots and lots of incredibly silly minigames and a great little sense of humor.

Loved Zelda and never had a problem with the saving of it.

Another vote for Zelda - its brilliant. To get to grips with how to control the controller I would recommend the Kororinpa, if hes ever played Marble Madness on the old NES its a bit like that. Its easy enough in the first stages but wicked hard towards the end.

And another vote for Mario Galaxy - ok I havent played it yet - its out Monday here, but the advertisements alone make it look fantastic!

Oh yeah, he does have Zelda but doesn’t really like it. He only tried it out once, though, so I’ll tell him to give it another go. As for losing played bits, he was playing Manhunt and even though he beat some difficult foes, if he died afterwards he had to beat them again, at the very least, again.

The Mario games osund good. Anyone played Cooking Mama?

I love Excite Truck, it’s one of my favorite racing games ever.

And if he likes Spider-Man: Friend or Foe, he’ll love Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Spider-Man: FoF was inspired partly by the success of the Lego Star Wars series.

Tiger Woods Golf is great fun, especially with a group. It’s like your playing a round of golf, but without having to go outside and get fresh air.

Anyone have or try Big Brain Academy?

If you like swordfighting do not, repeat, DO NOT get Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. The simulation is realistic, the voice is great, the swordplay bears no relation to what you’re actually doing with the sword, it’s delayed, it’s way too hard, and if you have to keep doing it over and over the cleverness of the dialogue gets stale real fast.

We have liked Zelda, Super Paper Mario, some of the games in Mario Party 8, and the big surprise, Mercury Meltdown Revolution (which had the added bonus of being cheap). Just got Super Mario Galaxy and it looks promising but the kid has to do homework so it doesn’t look like we’ll be breaking into it tonight.

My guys also like Madden 2008, a lot. A good replacement for when there’s no actual football on the tube. ::some kind of face here; none of the smilies really convey it; not quite a roll-eyes::

Super Mario Galaxy is fantastic. Period. Buy it now.

There are only a few games that can hold my interest long enough these days. SMG is definitely one of them. This is coming from a guy who had absolutely no intention or excitement about Super Mario Galaxy until about last week, when I read the reviews and saw some Youtube clips of the gameplay. The game is not what I thought it was going to be. It’s an excellent, excellent game that captures the spirit of Nintendo.

My other favorite games:

Super Paper Mario
Guitar Hero III
Resident Evil 4

Cooking Mama, in my opinion, was terrible. Graphics totally suck. Gameplay is boring. It’s only slightly entertaining the first couple times. Yuck.

Metroid Prime is quite a good game, but I just don’t seem to like first-person shooters, I guess. The controls are intuitive, the use of the wand/remote to aim, shoot, and look around is very natural…but, I dunno, I just can’t get into it. Then again, the only first person shooter I’ve had any interest in is Half Life and Half Life 2. Heck, even Halo bores me. But if you’re at all into FPS, this is the only one I’ve seen for the Wii that is worth having.

I haven’t played it yet, but I’ve heard good things about that Mario/Sonic the Hedgehog Olympics game that just came out, as well.

Just to add to the chorus, Super Mario Galaxy might be my favorite game I’ve ever played on any format. It’s just that good.

Super Paper Mario is brilliant, and it’s probably the second one I’d recommend. I liked Twilight Princess and Metroid: Prime 3, but I admit that I never finished either of them. Resident Evil 4 is great, but exactly what you’re not looking for.

Wario Ware is fun. Lots of Japanese weirdness. Great party game. Mario Strikers Charged! is also a lot of fun.

The Simpsons Game is extremely well-written, but the controls are horrible. Most of the challenge of the game came because you couldn’t get the damn camera pointed in the right direction. Even so, I’d recommend it for any Simpsons fan.

MARIO GALAXY! One of the most amazing games ever made.

I haven’t bought Super Mario Galaxy yet. My favorite so far has been Super Paper Mario, but shy guy is right. Since I finished, I haven’t played it. I liked Zelda until I got stuck on that part where you escort the Zoran kid and have to keep the wagon from burning. WarioWare:Smooth Moves is probably the game we have had the most fun as a group with.

Just a quick note if you or anyone is planning on buying Super Mario Galaxy, make sure you pick it up at Toys R Us if they have any copies left. Now through Saturday they are offering a free $25 gift card with the purchase of the game.

Got a Wii this summer. I’ve been out of the up-to-date console world for years, so YMMV.

DID NOT LIKE Big Brain Academy. Slow and too simple even for children. Traded it back in.

DID NOT LIKE Zelda. All that 3D engine power, and there I was, fishing. Traded it back in.

LOVE WiiSports, especially the Tennis and the Bowling. Golf is pretty good, too.

WiiPlay is OK, kind of hit or miss.

I love all the other games I have, including:

Call of Duty 3
Excite Truck
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Rayman’s Raving Rabbids
Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz
Super Paper Mario
Warioware: Smooth Moves

Amazon keeps recommending Red Steel to me. Any good?

I’ve seen this complaint before, and it puzzles me. I fished only as much as the plot demanded, which wasn’t much, and the 99.5% of the game that wasn’t fishing rocked too hard to pan the game for the fishing mechanics. And if you find yourself fishing more than required…I dunno, maybe you like doing so more than you think? In which case, why would you get rid of a game you enjoy playing?
