It’s 3 am - you just got home, and so barfing drunk you can barely see twenty feet ahead of you. Too swirling drunk to crash yet, thanks to those 14 tequila chasers you had, among other booze.
If, like me, it’s been a decade or two (or three or four) since you last experienced something similar to that, you’ll have to “remember through the fog”.
So you’re sitting there, all good n’bedspinny, and remember your ipod, (even if this might have been decades ago when there were no ipods around) which you loaded a bunch of dawning-of-hangover tunes on it.
mine:
“Tell Me Why” - Niel Young
“Ascent: An End” - Eno
“Julia” - Beatles anything by Jandek
“Never My Love” - the Association
“Going to California” - Zep
2nd movement from Beethoven’s 9th
“Sheltering Sky” - King Crimson
“Low Spark of High Heeled Boys” - Traffic
“Shipbuilding” - Elvis Costello
“From the Beginning” - ELP
“Drifting” - Hendrix
Tom Waits was the soundtrack to my blackout drunk days. Lots of nights on 39th Street getting completely fucked up while “Ninth and Hennepin” played on the jukebox.
UFO/Michael Schenker Group “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor”
Scorpions “Dynamite”
Early (80’s early 90’s) Metallica/Megadeth/Slayer
Any Tool
uh
and I’m sure dozens of others that my neighbor would normally hear me blast at 3 or 4 am and that I’m blanking on right now…We’ll see how it goes tonight and I’ll repost…
Got pretty toasty a couple of weeks ago. Wound up watching a bunch of Slayer videos on YT.
I don’t believe I’ve listened to Slayer since I was a teenager (27 years ago).
I am sorry to admit that back in the 80’s when Madonna was The Big Thing, we came home from a wedding drunk as ballz and I was lying on the living room floor squirming around sensuously to ‘Like A Virgin’. (hey, HOT! Jump on that, Baby!) Well, not only was I playing to an empty room (the S/O having barricaded himself in the toilet for the foreseeable future) I fell asleep there and woke up several hours later, still alone. Not as sensuous as Madonna, apparently. A sign of things to come.
I’d binge on good old 80’s stadium rock. Journey, Styx, Van Halen. Then I’d notice the glam metal I hadn’t listened to in 20 years, and Twisted Sister, Scorpions, Slade and their ilk. I’d be found in the morning passed out on the couch in my skivvies with Aldo Nova ‘Fantasy’ playing on endless loop.
Almost always something by Guns n Roses or Prince, depending on the mood of the party. Usually November Rain. Sadly, this hasn’t changed since my college years.
These days, a big bender is 3-4 glasses of wine and/or out past 11, but as they say, the song remains the same.
Specific lists in that state! Good lord no. Probably going to kick off with some Massive Attack, that could segue into a Fugazi/black flag / smashing pumpkins air drumming frenzy, or take another direction to some early U2, James or Radiohead, possibly Rush. If i am not then winding down with some Keb mo/pink floyd or mazzy star i am probably back at the drinks cabinet and starting from the top.
