So the governor of South Carolina is MISSING?

You win the internet, of course.

You actually said “sex tourism in the far east.” I’m not sure that visiting your mistress is sex tourism, but in any case Argentina is far south, not far east.

And we’re off.

Still, I maintain that I was closer than anybody else in this thread.

His wife has just asked him to leave home.

ETA: weird, that link on my news feed had the title “SC first lady says she asked gov to leave home (AP)” but the link has a different title, and doesn’t seem to mention it.

Everything I can find says she asked him to move out 2 weeks ago.

I actually agree with the guy who is apparently his arch-rival in the state, whose name I can’t now be arsed to look up again, who said with complete justice that the problem with sneaking out of the country for extra-marital nookie while you’re governor, is that you can’t just sneak out of the country for extra-marital nookie while you’re GOVERNOR! There are duties associated with the office that require that you have contingency plans in place in case the shit hits the fan in your absence, so that someone is authorized to act in your place and with your legal authority.

I’m no fan of infidelity, hypocrisy, or disrespecting your family, but those are largely personal problems. Not so for the complete irresponsibility of simply abandoning your elected position in the hope you’ll be able to sneak back before anyone notices.

Yeah, my mistake. That’s what I get for posting a link after only reading the headline. :smack: (and my news feed has since changed it to reflect the one in the article which is simply “SC Gov. Sanford admits affair after going AWOL”)

I agree and disagree. I agree that for S.C., the major problem might be the lack of oversight during his visits to a stimulus package he can live with.

However, as a member of a party that has trumpeted family values, and demeaned and degraded anyone not agreeing with them on issues of moral behavior, the affair is just as important, as it highlights either the utter hypocrisy of the party, or the utter unrealistic nature of their demands that people behave in a certain way.

Our mileage varies then, which is fine. IMO, the affair is never just as important as the public business.

I’m hard at work on a screenplay about this. I’m thinking it needs to be a political thriller and it needs a killer title. How do you folks like “The Governor’s Cock is Missing?”

That’s cool, and I understand your stance. It’s just that the Republican’s public business for a long time now has BEEN private behavior, and the regulation and condemnation thereof.

If part of your public business is making sure that people who engage in private behavior of which you disapprove do not have equal rights, and condemning everyone who doesn’t follow your religious path, and having the official power to attempt to enforce a moral code, then it is definitely important when you engage in private behavior that seems to violate that stated moral code.

Quick! Someone call Maury!

i’m glad to see that his wife just issued a statement and didn’t stand with him during the announcement.

snorts and mayhem! what happened to just saying “no” to sex with people who are not your spouse?!

Isn’t that one of them there…what do you call it…“family values?”

nah, just an off shoot of the nancy reagan drug program.

just say “no”!!!

i guess i see it as a logic thing. lots of people get huge headlines and lose their jobs over having sex with people to whom they are not married. logic would dictate that would not be a good thing to do. (unless you want headlines and unemployment)

Looking at a map, it seems that Argentina is east of South Carolina. “Far” east? Well …

You know those abstinence pledge parties they have for teenagers? I’m wondering why they can’t throw one for politicians, if they work so well.

WTF??? Sanford moved out two weeks ago, at his wife’s request. While he’s out, he zooms off to Argentina to get some nookie with the mistress, and gets caught. And wifey responds by saying “he’s earned a second chance”?

I was all set to feel sorry for this woman, but good gravy, what the hell in his conduct has earned the bastard a second chance?

But, she is now apparently saying that he has earned a chance to patch it up. I read this, along with his “lots of crying” in Argentina to mean that he has “ended” the affair now and intends to try and get back to being a family man.

His wife, who is btw independently wealthyish, ought to tell him to take a fucking hike, though he might take that literally. :stuck_out_tongue:
