DEVA…My man lives in Dallas/Fort Worth area and when we marry, I’m going to move down there, but truthfully, I’m a bit scared. And I agree with you wholeheartedly. Sometimes when he tells me stories of his 31 yrs of experiences in Texas and Oklahoma, it makes me think of how much easier I’ve had it up here because it not as blatant. But, I honestly wonder if I should even make the move down there. Especially with my reaction to this incident, i’d have to grow thicker skin to survive.

I can see where you would have reservations about moving to Texas. Although I have visited Dallas and Houston, I’ve never lived in the state. These are the places that I have lived: St. Louis (hometown), Tampa FL, Memphis TN, Atlanta GA, and now Northern Virginia (20 miles outside of DC). Overt racism exists everywhere, but it is simply MORE overt in some cities (or even neighborhoods) than others. This is MY experience: Atlanta was full of extremely overt racism. I even got to see live and in-color for the first and only time in my life…drum roll please…members of the KKK. Full klansman garb with the masks and all. They were holding signs that read “Nigers go home!” Please note that I did not mispell “nigger”…THEY did. Now of course not all racists in Atlanta are klansmen…but they may as well have been for their behavior.
Now let’s fast-forward to Virginia. In my 13 years experience of living in the DC area, I have found that the racists here are much more undercover. We have theories as to WHY they are more undercover, but I won’t go into that here. Point is this: I MUCH preferred being aware of who I had to watch out for as opposed to never being too sure.

Having lived in Texas, I can assure you it’s already pretty messed up, and therefore doesn’t require any more messing, thank you.
That particular drunken asshole will probably have a lifetime of getting his ass kicked, losing jobs and blaming everybody but himself. Not a happy person.
But at least that kind of racism is easier to identify. In the States, you’re more likely to be the subject of hidden, genteel racism – the kind that doesn’t shout “Nigger!” but does make sure you have a harder time getting a bank loan or rising in a company. I think that’s fading away over time, but fear and tribalism are such deeply embedded human characteristics, we may never be rid of such problems.

Texas, let’s see…our Mayor and Chief of Police are black here in Houston.
My bank vice president, and our loan officer on the car were both black. I work in a Very Wealthy suburb, and there are wealthy black execs and business owners everywhere. There are more “minorities” than white people on the city council. In the city proper, races other than caucasian are more plentiful that your basic white folks.
Don’t know about Dallas. My former employers had lived in Dallas for 6 years, and Houston for 4 years before that. He quit an excellent job to move back to Houston because of the racial difference. She was raised in Minnesota, and although black, was a Lutheran. Here they were welcomed and active in their church. In Dallas, they were stared at as if they had three heads.
Dallas has evidently made progress since then, and has had a black mayor. My white-boy blues musician brother, who plays in racially mixed bands, says that it isn’t as bad as it used to be. Ten years ago, they were unable to get their motel rooms as booked because the guy with the credit card was black, so they sent Baby Bro in with the card when a different desk clerk came on, and no prob. Same motel 10 years later, no problem, the desk clerk and the manager are both black, but the maintenance guy is white.
And with the amount of interracial dating and marriage around here, the barriers are crumbling fast. What i’ve seen mostly here, is that the average person will get to know you before they judge your character, and the redneck scum get treated like redneck scum when they act like it.
Heck, after a good asswhuppin’ almost anybody will behave, and I have seen more than one good ol’ boy get his whupped for nothing more than using That Word in front of a black nun. (It helps that i’ve met a group of black nuns that love to go to to the same flea market I do.)
Come visit Texas before you say no. Stay outta Oklahoma. Not for racial reasons, just because it’s Oklahoma.

I just have to say that I am appalled that this fellow called you a FAT NIGGER BITCH. As everyone knows, the phrase FAT NIGGER BITCH is definitely not PC. And it isn’t as if it were regional or only recently achieved such ultra-offensive status (as say CUNT has). I can remember back in the 70s my own mother telling me, “Now son. Well, let’s see. It’s 3 a.m. and some loser is trying to get it on with a ho, when he hears some loud derisive laughter from a crowd of women causing his dick to shrink. He observes the crowd and notices that they are black. So he assembles every word he can muster to take on revenge, and provides the usual “fat” and “bitch” ( common insults on the SDMB pit) and for good measure the “n” word. He wants to hurt you back, and like all insulters will choose the most effective words available. It doesn’t take a racist to know how to make a black person feel bad.

First of all, if you read the post properly, we were NOT a group of women laughing. My sister and I were standing at a bus stop seeing a friend off. We were not getting on the bus. He came running up to me. Secondly, He had no idea what we were laughing at. He was in the middle of the street. We were laughing amongst ourselves. After hurling a couple of “fat nigger bitches” at me, he then ran over to the line up of women, whom all happened to be Black, and did the same to them. When that line disappeared, he then came back to verbally assault me and looked like he was about to physically assault me.
It infuriates me to think that ** YOU** don’t think that **I ** have enough evidence to cry out racism.
What do I need??? Maybe I should have waited for the guy to physically assault me with Cunt, Twat, etc, so that I can justify the “bitch”. Or maybe I should have explained to him that I am not fat, because we Niggers actually like meat on our bodies. Or even better! The fact that this man came up to me and called me a nigger with no REAL provocation is enough evidence for me.

No ** JuanitaTech**, I the point being made is that provocation is behind the perp’s response however inappropriate. That is key to determining if his response is merely to insult (and hurt)a particular group of people at a bus stop for a perceived offense or whether his behaviour is indicative of a particular mindset towards black people in general.
