In late spring, a cute fuzzball started showing up in the yard. We didn’t know who she belonged to, but figured someone got a new kitty. Over time, we began to notice she was getting thin and her coat was looking dirty. We asked around, but no one claimed her. One of our neighbors across the street believed that the people two houses down from us, tossed her out when they moved.
So, in the summer, we began to feed her, and gave her a little house to hide in when it rained. Last week, we decided to take her to the vet, get her blood and stool worked up and see how she is.
She came back with a clean bill of health, so now she is now in the house. We’ve got her separated in our room from the other two, Momma and Zelda, until they all get used to each other.
This morning both Momma and Zelda were outside the door with their noses under the door, so they know she is there now. She hid in the closet most of the night, but she did come out to do a drive-by, she ate a bit, and left a deposit in the box.
Momma and Zelda are mother and daughter we adopted as strays from someone who runs a Save a Friend in another town. Momma is about 4 years old, Zelda is about 2.
We named her Gimpy because of a limp in her left front paw. The vet doesn’t think it is serious as she can still jump and she hunted well while outside. She’s about 1.5-2 years old, very friendly and loves to be pet.
So now we have a three-pack of kitties in the house. In a few days we’ll see how they like each other.
With any luck, the two other kitties will adjust easily. I’ve never had problems bringing a new kitty in to my pack – even the one who hissed and spat when I took the top off her carrier in the spare room (a dilute torbie) came out the next day and suddenly realized, oh, this is the perfect place for me! Toys everywhere! Food on demand! Scritches! A magic box that cleans itself! Curtains!!!
The night after coming out of the spare room, I woke up to her sleeping on her back beside me, tummy exposed, paws wrapped around my arm, looking blissed out. She’s slept on my hip ever since.
My tortie came to my house as a stray and was immediately adopted by the male cat in the household. He fell in love and treated her like his kitten. It was adorable.
How beautiful they all are. I love black cats, they look like miniature panthers. Gimpy is also very beautiful. May I ask if she was already fixed? It looks like she’s been ear-tipped and vets don’t usually do that for housecats.
We think the people who left her may have got her from the pound, or one of the cat groups around here caught her and had her fixed and released, not really sure.
She hasn’t slept with us yet. She does a couple drive-by’s, then heads back into the closet. We talk to her, but mostly let her be. She’s eating and drinking well, and doing her business, so all is well there. Hopefully in a couple more days she’ll settle and start to roam more and talk to us. She was very friendly and lovable outside, so I’m sure she will be once she realizes all is good.
I love the black cats too, very beautiful panther like.
