I still want to know why several teams had so much trouble getting the cars started and put in gear - are high-end cars that different?
Thrifty Parking may or may not be related to Thrifty Rental, but they have their own shuttle service according to their website: http://thriftyparking.com/index.aspx
Aha! On further Googling, it seems Thrifty Parking is indeed related to Thrifty Car Rentals: http://www.thrifty.com. Seems both Thrifty Parking and Thrifty Rentals are not at the airport itself, but nearby according Google maps. The other teams apparently went straight to onsite rental parking. So their cars may or may not have been rented from Thrifty, but either way they shouldn’t have gone straight to airport parking.
My reading of that scene is that they couldn’t find or were unfamiliar with the shifter, which was on the steering column.
I figured they weren’t pressing the brake pedal hard enough (or not at all) to activate the safety interlocks before you start the car or shift into gear.
Could be like my Prius which has push-button starting and a very strange little shifter. If you’re not used to that kind of set-up, I can see how you would be baffled. (But there’s always the owner’s manual.)
