Can’t get UPN here; static from the WTC collapse. Damn. Tell me what happened??
How did you like the grin that the doctor showed? Did that look like a Grinch smile or what? I’m wondering if it’s digitally enhanced.
gosh, and not once did Capt. Archer fullfill my wishes and utter the words “Oh Boy!” while looking in a mirror. Otherwise, I think if you put aside Star Trek for being Star Trek and look at Enterprise as something completely new and unrelated, it’s not so bad for what I’ve seen.
I like the idea of there being a pooch on board too.
I really like the Vulcan. Hells yeah!
This show needs a late night version with lots of visits to the Rigel system.
It’s a little better than the 1st season of Babylon 5 (so far). Definitely better than Voyager. Still kinda reeks, though. Since I only threw the remote at the TV once, I’ll probably withhold judgement and watch the next few episodes. It looks like it could possibly get better–love that tension between the Vulcans and Humans. I was a bit disapointed that the bridge design was the same old thing, only darker gray. The rest of the designs were great though–the new ship rocks.
I’m also kinda proud that my prediction from a few months back came through. I predicted that the moment Berman felt his ratings threatened, he’d immediately strip his supposedly “cold and scientific” Vulcan science officer down to her skivvies and make her prance about. What do we get in the very first episode?
Opening Theme: Having been forwarned, I was mentally prepared. But, it’s not that bad. I like the montage they do behind it, about the history of the Enterprise.
Porn Scene: It reeked, but at least they were fair. To be honest, Kirk would have put the moves on T’pol, pon farr be darned.
The Ship Nice ship. Good design.
Vulcans as Racists: That’ll get old quick. Fortunately I doubt it’ll be an issue too long.
Overall, I do like it. Better than Voyager, DS9 and TNG’s openings, but then B&B have had a decade or so to get it right.
Thank you! I thought there for a minute I was the only one who thought this. I really like the song: it fits in well with the history of space flight opening.
I thought it rocked.
Couple things:
Agreed. Although I like the idea of a newer, fresher theme with lyrics (not that I didn’t like all the previous), I don’t think that particular song is going to wear well over time. The “feel” of the show is very dated to the 2000’s (but then, TOS is pretty dated to the 1960’s, and its message is still ok, so maybe it won’t be that bad).
Yup - he was Ambassador Soval. Vaughn Armstrong was Admiral Forrest, who also played Korath on Voyager, Korris on Next Generation (the first time Worf hung out with other Klingons), and several other Trek roles. Rumor has it Jeffrey Combs, who played Weyoun on DS9 was somewhere in there as well (Trek is infamous for re-using character actors many times over).
As I said to the others in the room, “Is anybody paying any attention to the dialogue?”
I dunno, I didn’t think Tucker was all that cute until he took his shirt off… <pant pant pant>
bernse, were you unaware that Enterprise occurs before the original series? Perhaps that might explain the uniforms, and Flox is definitely not Cardassian, but they have not said what his race is yet.

Had to have been. I hope they do it again. jkusters said he’s afraid he’s going to turn into a Neelix, but I disagree - I see him as (hopefully) becoming a creepy sort, kind of like, “Ooo, look, an alien’s been killed - let’s dissect him!”
Couple of things we discussed afterwards, including all the canon they dispensed with:
[ul][li]So much for “no gratuitous sexy Seven of Nine-esque stuff this time!”[/li][li]Viewscreens - according to Spock, Humans and Romulans didn’t have “face to face communication” during the Romulan War.[/li][li]Warp drive - again, the Romulan War was supposed to have been fought sub-light.[/li][li]Phasers - again, the Romulan War was supposed to have been bought with atomic warheads.[/li][li]We were lead to believe there would be more dials, knobs and levers, but I still saw mostly touch-pad interfaces (although I did see a table full of keyboards once). Kudos, though, on T’Pol’s pop-up science station scanner - nice tip of the hat to the original series.[/li][li]How is it that a space jockey knows where the “sweet spot” on the ship is, but the frellin’ chief engineer has never even heard of it?[/li][li]No automatic swooshing doors![/li][li]Wall-mounted intra-ship communications![/li][li]Nice overall feel to the ship - submarine-esque, as promised. And could the warp core be any bigger? And warp 4.5 is fast? Shaa! :)[/li][li]I was hoping we’d put off some of the tenents of later Trek-dom (transporters, time travel, lots o’ funky aliens), but hopefully the writing will make up for it.[/li][li]A (possible) return to the triumvirate of action (Archer), emotion (Tucker) and logic (T’Pol).[/li][li]Scott Bakula owns this show. I think he’s going to make a stand-out captain. All the other characters are going to need time to settle into their groove, but it will happen.[/ul][/li]
I’m sure jkusters, being the biggest TOS fan I know, will have more flagrant discrepancies to air.

Chalk me up as another “I liked the opening sequence.” It had that “grand” appeal but in a more quiet and subtle way. It wasn’t “Wow! Look at that!”; it was, well, nice.
Scott Bakula as Captain Archer was totally unconvincing for me. I wouldn’t follow the guy down to the local mini-mart, let alone across a galaxy. The dog was cute, though.

Oh yes, I was aware of that. With my Whats with the uniforms? comment I was inferring I didn’t care for them much, nor do I see how they fit “in”. I was kind of expecting a take off of TOS uniforms… but I guess I was just expecting too much.
Thats all.
I liked the ship though.
OT - Does anyone remember in Picard’s ready-room, on the wall he had “plaques” of the other “Enterprises?” If so, do you recall if there was another starship before the NCC-1701? While I’m not a big die-hard trekkie, I can’t remember that. I’d be curious to know if there was.

Simple. As I pointed out in a Café thread, the guy has spent nearly his entire life on spacefaring vessels.

I just wished he had said “Oh Boy!” when he realized he had been transported. He had that look on his face, and it would have been a hilarious joke.
I liked the show. After Voyager and DS-9 I was pleasantly impressed and I am hopeful for future shows.
While Captain Picard did a good job of the enlightened captain I didn’t like it so much in Captain Janeway or Commander Sisko. It’s good to see a return to the swashbuckling, kick-ass, kiss the girls and take names later attitude of Captain Kirk (as the writers kinda pointed out for us when Captain Archer threatened to knock T’Pal on her ass).
I too thought the porn scene was a bit gratuitous and forced. I too also add my vote for totally hot babe in T’Pal so I won’t complain too much. Much hotter than Seven of Nine, Deanna Troy or pretty much anyone else to this point. I noticed that they had to be very careful to rub oil all over their bodies including each others ears…I was waiting for the pants to drop but I guess American TV isn’t there yet.
I thought the ship was done very well. More modern looking than ST:TOS to reflect up-to-date graphics yet it also felt old and lower tech than the ST:TOS ship did at the same time. Nicely done.
I missed the opening sequence. I hadn’t heard a word about them so I was disappointed but now I think I may have been lucky.
Thumbs up!
I thought it was pretty good, too. BTW, the “porn” scene everyone talks about was changed; originally, T’Pol and Tucker were supposed to have sex off-camera. Apparently, someone remembered about pon farr. Or, perhaps, they decided it was too early for that kind of sexual attraction. (If you want to read the original script, click here. It’s a pdf document, so you’ll need Adobe Acrobat.)
Esprix pointed out all the obvious continutiy errors, so I won’t mention them here. I would like to point out that, once again, no matter how slow the ship is, the nearest planet is still no more than a few days away!
While I liked the visuals in the opening credits, I despised the music and was surprised there were lyrics. Voyager’s opening was nominated for an Emmy (it lost to ER), but I don’t see this one getting nominated.

Truly the best moment of the episode.

jab1: not that I’m calling you wrong, but my copy of the script doesn’t have a hint of sex between the two.
[sub]How many copies are out there anyway? Sheesh. ;)[/sub]
Non-rabid, but fairly knowledgeable in a passing sort of way Trekkie-er-ist-whatever checking in.
The things I was afraid would happen didn’t, so I am pleased.
Action - it’s an action series … Oh Joy! I was so afraid this was going to be another slow passion play offset once or twice with a phaser blast. It’s a lot more like the Original Series (in mood and process) than any other offshoot (although granted, I haven’t seen every episode of any series, except the original).
I was also afraid that things would look too “modern”. I do wish there had been more knobs and flip card counters and stuff like that, but I think the idea of making the ship look like it was strung together by “techies” and not interior designers was the key. I noticed most equipment modules had a lot of exposed jacks and handles on them, like everything was designed for function not fashion.
That was one thing that killed Phantom Menace for me. It took place scores of years before New Hope but everything looked sleeker and more modern. Did not compute.
So I’m glad Enterprise didn’t fall into the Phantom Menace conundrum.
Side note: When Captain Archer was in that Time Room, or whatever, did anyone else say to themselves, “Whoah dude, I had a trip just like that once.”

Dave, that had to be the worst tripe I’ve ever read.
I loved it!
