I can’t fathom putting anyone on the ignore list. Everyone here is so entertaining. More to the point, jackass posts tend to generate particularly clever barbs in response. In order to fully appreciate those responses, I need to see the original post being answered.
Agreed. Using ignore is missing out on the fun.
That’s fine, my post you quoted was an in context answer specifically to Rand Rover and anyone else who does goes on the attack with **Der Trihs **instead of just asking questions. Nobody needs to do this and I can well understand not wanting to bother with him. As a Vet he has pissed me off many times on the same issue that he gets you.
This was the main thing I was responding to:
I love the ignore list. I have three people on it, and every time I see one of their blanked-out posts I purr and think about how I’ve avoided another nugget of snotty, arrogant drivel (which is all these three people ever post).
The use I have for the ignore list is that it’s a handy way to keep tabs on posters who have said things that I find particularly rude, offensive, abusive or otherwise disturbing to me. Their slights may be months or longer old. They would have demonstrated persistent tendencies of the same sort of meanness, not just a one-time post or two.
They’re the ones that I would ban if I had the authority.
Now and then, whatever it was that caused me to “ignore” them to start with will pale to their current way of expressing themselves and I’ll remove them from the list.
Some have been banned.
Some were offensive enough that I have no curiosity over what they might say, and no reason to expect them to have changed. Even if they have changed, I’d want to keep the “beware” tag on them.
Others were mild enough in their actions that I just wanted the reminder to “tread softly” in dealing with this person.
I find it a handy tool and use it with abandon. My latest list has over a dozen Limbo or Purgatory dwellers. Just this week I have removed two former dwellers because they have shown me they’ve “done their time.”
If the feature didn’t exist I’d have to keep a pencil-and-paper list and remember to check it whenever a dubious name appears in a thread I care about.
Just trying to point out that it’s not a black-and-white issue for me. And, as usual, YMMV.
Exactly!
Guin I though Justthink was gone too. I will try to remember Kancibird is a boy (but it seems like a girls name)
I just re-ignored my person.
It felt great!
I’m so vain, I bet I think this post is about me. AMIRITE?
What happens if someone puts themself on their own ignore list? Would the universe implode or something?
I’m so vain, I bet I think this post is about me. AMIRITE?
The option is not available to ignore yourself so I guess we don’t need to fear it.
Yeah, but can you ignore one of your socks?
Yes, yes you can. Of course now you will drive poor Marley23 crazy. He can’t resist a good Sock hunt. It is like a bug hunt and he likes to Nuke them from orbit.
What a relief. I guess I can seal up the bomb shelter.
I reserve the right to respond when somebody else makes a reference to me being an Evil Overlord, though. Hence the above threat to Oakminster.
Darling, you know that I’m only 95% straight & perfectly happy that way. You can’t insult me thus.
And it’s “Skaldimus.” Or you could be like the ladies Rhymer and simply call me some variety of buttmunch. I don’t see how they could justfiy banning you for that, as everyone would protest by saying “Um…in what world is Skaldimus not a buttmunch?”
ETA: Besides, my gay cartoon crush is on Mr. Terrific.
Nobody’s ever been worth the bother.
I do have one. He posts predictably in threads on a specific political topic, and he takes what I consider to be an extremist position and represents it dishonestly, and is quite aggressive about it.
I normally don’t notice who posts what, I evaluate each post on its own merit. Clearly he is not the only poster like this, and he is not anywhere near the most extreme/dishonest. The key difference between him and other posters is that his posts are extremely long. Here’s how it went:
I find myself reading a disagreeable post. As I keep reading, I find it more disagreeable. I can’t just scan past. The posts are too long! This is in contrast to other disagreeable posters - no matter how unpleasant I find their post, at least they’re over quickly. As I keep reading I say to myself “Who is writing this long disagreeable post?” and check to see the author.
When I realized that every single time I had this experience, it was the same poster I was reading, I got out the old ignore stick. This way I can avoid getting drawn into the morass of disagreeability that I inevitably experience if I forget to skip reading his post.
If he turns up in a non-political thread, I can just view the post. It’s occasionally worthwhile. But when I see his name and ignored post in political threads, I feel a sense of relief that I have dodged a bullet.
And if there is anything interesting/relevant/honest in his post, someone will inevitably quote those bits back, along with their response. In this way, the nuggets of value are mined from the pile of masturbatory verbiage that comprise most of his posts.
I don’t need to employ a software doohickie to ignore someone, I just ignore them. I tried it for awhile, and it just became confusing. (there was only one anyway, but they just kept popping up in all the threads I was interested in and it messed with the flow.)
me too, but only the latin speaking wanker in my case.
