So You Think You Can Dance Finale 8/15-16

Sabra

So now the producers have their female winner, does that mean they’re going to go back to being more objective in their judging next season? Or are they still going to throw talented dancers like Jesus, Jimmie, Jessi and Anya under the “hot tamale train” for no apparent reason? Hunchback Neil should never have seen the top 10, let alone the top 4.

I understand why Mary “chose” Pasha and Lauren’s hip-hop as her favorite, so that they could have a proper send-off, but that meant that there was no chance for Pasha/Anya Latin hotness. Still, at least he still got two dances, including the great WCS with Sara. I guess she’s this year’s Heidi - both had lots to do in the finale.

I’m not sure why, but I enjoyed Mia’s Flower Dance much more this time. The one thing I worried about most each time, though, was one of the dancers slipping on a flower and falling. Not sure why that never happened, really. Anyway, congratulations to Sabra.

I wanted either Sabra or Neil to win, so I’m happy.

I actually voted for Sabra (I usually just watch the show) and I was thrilled that she won. I enjoyed most of the show - I don’t understand the need for musical “guests” promoting their upcoming albums - but I was happy to see the hip hop love story from Sean, the Flower dance from from Mia and the “Bird Dance” again.

Shoo-be-do-be-do-be- dance.

No storm here–but power outages caused me to watch much less of the show than I’d kind of intended–though I did get to see the announcement of the winner.

Hooray Sabra! I was a little off on my predictions above, but I’m happy with the outcome.

But that Nigel-Cat “dance” was total bullshit.

Agreed. Pathetically dumb gag.

We had a storm here and, luckily we only lost internet access. Whew!

I’m glad I like Danny as a dancer, but I never liked his personality. For some reason, that was a factor for me. Winning a competition should be based on ability, but for the audience, it was more satisfying to see a great dancer who’s very likeable winning the whole thing.

I was very happy for Sabra.

And, yeah that dress was hideous! I wanted to punch whoever dressed her last night.

Yeah, I was pissed off. I was really looking forward to actually seeing a dance between those two.

I was thrilled to see the Neil/Sara disco routine again, and the Pasha/Lauren transformers-inspired hip hop. Was hoping to see the angel/devil Neil/Lauren thing, but no. And I was totally psyched that they brought that scoliosis guy- forget his name- who did the popping and locking routine to the Christina Aguilera song. Love the way that kid moves.

And considering how many times they teased the Nigel/Cat dance, that thing was a big fucking waste of time. While it was playing I figured it was an intro to the real thing. That was a really bad idea, and brought the whole evening to a screeching halt. But Nigel’s friends at Jib-Jab got their shout out, so I guess they’re happy.

Three things:

  1. The show is complete hell to sit through, but I feel it was all worth it because I got to see that amazing robot dance again. Brian Gaynor.

  2. Sabra is very deserving, but the title should’ve gone to Danny. Closely related: I think Travis’s mom’s studio should get an Emmy. And I was only half joking with my wife last night when I said “from now on this show’s going to be a feud between Schwimmer and Wall.” Can you just imagine the West-Side-Story-esque musical the rivalry could spawn?

  3. The foxy dance. I’m with Velma here because I thought it was really good, and as a bonus, Lacey toned down her “look at me!” act. Why couldn’t the judges “get” it?
I missed the Nigel/Cat dance. What’s the deal?

I disagree that Danny should have won. He was a great technician but could not break down the barrier, whatever that is, between him and the audience. He went through the motions, beautifully, but he never felt it. I felt the same way with Lacey. She was too self-conscious or something.

Sabra felt it.

Neil didn’t do anything for me at first, but really came on strong at the end.

I Tivoed the show and ffwd through most of it. I did stop to see Brian Gaynor and was intrigued to see how nervous he was. What a great personality he is.

Liberal, I though exactly the same way about the flower dance. I even said aloud to my husband, “I hope no one breaks an ankle on those flowers.”

The vagabond number wasn’t as fun the second time around.

My favorite dance the whole season, and the one I watched repeatedly, was the “Sweet Dreams” number by Mandy Moore, danced by Sabra and Neil. It was very cool.

I think that they work these kids too much in the last few weeks. The number of dances they have to learn and the hours they put in are hurting the show. All the dancers just seemed exhausted at the end and the energy level dropped considerably. They should pare it back a bit before one of these kids gets hurt.

Cat announced early on that she would be dancing with Nigel. Then, several times throughout the evening, she made coy references to it with camera-play between her and him. Finally, near the end, after having built up so much anticipation, she gave a last teaser just before the commercial. When they returned she was offstage and Nigel was nowhere to be found. Mary stood and announced amongst much fanfare and whooping, “Ladies and Gentleman, dancing for the first time on this stage! Cat Deely and Nigel Lythgoe! Let’s hear it for Cat and Nigel!!”

And then…

A fucking 20 second video played with cartoons of Cat’s and Nigel’s heads superimposed over a couple of Mexican Hat dancers.

I wanted to choke them.

Sabra and Neil’s Paso Doble won me to Sab!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

For me it was the angel/devil (“Night of the Dancing Flame”) with Lauren and Neil, so I was disappointed it didn’t get a reprise last night.

I’ve said it before, but here goes anyway: although I’m equally addicted to both SYTYCD and American Idol, AI could take notes from their sister show. The contestants are all genuinely likable; the judges generally offer meaningful and constructive criticism, and they realize that the show is about the contestants, not them. And I’d take Cat Neely (cuter 'n a bugs ear) over Ryan Seacrest, and his forced banter with Simon Cowell, any day. I thought Cat’s reaction to Neil’s final Wookie impression was the highlight of the show. Well…almost.

As to Danny and the barrier between him and the audience, I have a soft spot for him as it seems he is an introvert. And as MrRancher is an introvert, I can understand how not many can relate to him - and why that’s not completely his fault.

People seem to assume that quiet introverted people are arrogant assholes, when the reality is far different than that. I think Danny started to let his true personality come through toward the end of the season, but it was too late for him. He had been judged and his personality found lacking, when really it was just his introvertedness that kept his true personality from shining through.

Of course I might be biased and maybe he’s not an introvert. But either way, I wanted him to win!

That was a really cool dance, but I wish Sabra was facing the audience when they performed the atomic death drop at the end. My favorite dance this season was Lacey and Kameron’s contemporary number. It was far better than the flower dance, and I would’ve loved to see a reprisal with the dancers being more experienced now. The music they used in that number was extraordinary.

Yay Sabra!

Just skimmed the thread to find out who won.

Yay Sabra!

Wow, you’re right. I’d forgotten about that one. Just amazing, really. Extraordinary.
