So You Think You Can Dance Season 4 - 2008

Mia took her bitch pill before the show. She’s so hard on the dancers, especially the women.

Chelsea & Thayne’s routine was a disappointment. The music was incongruous with the theme. No chemistry.

I got chills watching Courtney and Gev’s routine.

Was surprised how bad Susie was at the salsa. Her lack of experience is beginning to show. The whole routine was just clunky.

My favorite was Twitch and Kherington’s waltz. Twitch is just immensely likeable and Kherington’s lines were amazing. And they have really amazing chemistry. Mia’s comments were like coitus interruptus by grumpy parents.

What a GREAT analogy. That’s just what it was like.

I still miss Our Danny of Spine-Tingling Gorgeousness who was so Obviously Robbed last season.

But Will kinda makes up for it, and Twitch. I hope Twitch wins.

I missed the Chelsea/Thayne dance, but it sounds like I didn’t miss much.

As for the rest, I really think the men are much stronger this season overall. I’m particularly mesmerized by Will, although it’s obvious he’s absolutely first class all the way. And Twitch and Joshua are both turning out to be far, far more versatile than I expected either to be.

I agree that Matt reminded me of Fred Astaire. He had that slender elegance, the really clean lines, that Fred had. I was too busy noticing his beautiful footwork to notice his “soft” arms that Nigel complained about.

And speaking of Nigel, if I never, EVER see him grab his crotch again, it will be too soon. Pass the brain bleach!

I agree, Mama Tiger on both points. Will, Twitch and Joshua are my faves-I love to watch Joshua. He seems like he has the sweetest personality, Will brings the sex appeal and Twitch the goofiness.

The men stand out more for me this year, with the exception of Comfort.

I really liked their’s also. It’s so insanely obviously Gev wants Courtney in the worse way possible.

Clunky would be the best way to describe it, I think; especially when she did that hand stand. It didn’t flow at all. They damn near stopped the entire dance so she could get in position. If they aren’t in the bottom three I will be hugely surprised.

Yeah Susie sucked at that salsa. She looked so stiff! Bleah.

Nigel sure got out of his seat a lot this week, didn’t he? Geez.

Kourtni looks like the secret love child of Uma Thurman and Cameron Diaz.

This week proved to me once again: I Don’t Get Contemporary. Gev and Courtney are cute as hell and great dancers, but that was painful to watch. It wasn’t them–it was the choreography. Ugh.

Will, Twitch, and Joshua are my favorites as well. I always had a soft spot in my heart for Twitch–he just seems like a VERY nice guy with no prima donna attitude in him at all…plus he looks damn fine shirtless. Will is incredibly professional and amazingly talented, and Joshua can do some incredible things with his body and has managed to be spectacular in every style he’s been asked to do. I would not be sad to see any of those three win.

As far as the girls, I love Comfort’s attitude, and Katee has surprised the hell out of me. Kherington is probably the best, although I think a lot of that has to do with the near-instant chemistry between her and Twitch.

You can count me as another person who didn’t like Chelsie/Thayne’s routine. And nearly all the stuff which didn’t work for me was stuff they couldn’t help–I thought the music sounded like something better suited for a different style of dancing and the costumes were goofy.

I was annoyed by the judge or whoever who claimed that America Gets HipHop. 'Cause I don’t. It’s ok–I don’t “get” contemporary, jazz, or krumping either, but while a hiphop routine can be fun to watch and is usually uptempo, I don’t feel like I get it. Also, it bugs me that appropriate costuming for hiphop includes baggy streetclothes.

I didn’t like the hair of the girl who did foxtrot. But that’s incredibly petty.

Katee/Joshua – Broadway. Fun routine–but the overt clowniness of the costumes bugged me. Although, in fairness, that’s because I recognized the song as being from Godspell, where it’s a duet between J.C. and Judas. I don’t think costuming or choreography for Broadway routines need to pay homage to the source, it was just disconcerting to hear that music again so soon. (It was sung in church recently. No dancing, just singing, and a little disconcerting there as well. Although also fun).
Susie/Marquis C- Bad costuming on Susie. Although atleast it was conventional dance style bad costuming. I hate costuming on female dancers which consists of a handful of spangles and a minimum of cloth stretched accross the front of the body, with something eyecatching on the derriere. And since this looked like feathers, this was extra bad–though not as bad as the first girl’s costume, which looked more like a saggy diaper.

Kerrington/Twitch A- Vienese Waltz. Continuing on my theme of costuming which annoyed me-- I don’t like this alternate style of female costuming, which consists of an artistically draped sheet. Although this was at least nice, flowy artistically draped sheet.

I just started watching this show. Enjoy the dancing - Twitch, Joshua, and Katee were standouts I thought. But the judges ! esp the shreiking harpy woman in the middle!! Can one of you long time watchers explain her to me? Does she just function as the “nutty” judge, a la Paula on Idol? What’s her background? Seriously, she is so annoying I had to change the channel when she came on.

Ah, yes…Mary Murphy. The comparison to Paula Idol is only half-right. She offers both positive and negative critiques, unlike Paula who loves everybody. But when she’s positive, she goes around the bend to Loony Town.

Not sure about her background; she’s always described as being the ballroom expert.

She’s Mary Murphy. You can read her bio on fox.com. Her creds are impressive and she really knows what she’s talking about and gives excellent criticism even if her voice and mannerisms are annoying. Can’t have boring judges don’t you know?

It seems to me that this dancing experience does much more than hone dancing skills and introduce dancers to various and unique dance styles they would probably not normally encounter. It also teaches them how to perform, which is different than just dancing. Their emotion and personalities need to embrace their audience and evoke feelings beyond merely, “Ooh, that was nicely done. He/she is very talented.” Without that extra spark you won’t get the votes needed to move on. You can be a dancer with good technique, but to be a star you must shine.

OK, this is getting stupid. At this point, we should be having a new thread each week instead of extending this one for the entire season (which it seems otherwise destined to do). So here we go.

Why is this stupid? We’d agreed to do a single thread that you can bookmark, instead of looking for a new thread each week.

Yeah, we talked about it and decided on this, since we don’t get multiple pages per episode/week.

I’m hoping on Twitch for the Win. He’s surprising the heck out of me with his versatility. He said during the tryouts that he’s studied some other forms of dance to round himself out, and I think it shows. Not just in the dancing, but in the attitude that he’ll work hard to get it done. Kerrington was just stunning in that white dress.

On to the others… Joshua should not have been wearing that hat. That brim over his face made us unable to see any of his facial expresions. His dancing was awesome, but unless he was right up front or they were doing a camera close-up, you couldn’t see his expression. That’s a biggie in Broadway where they’re “shouting it out to the cheap seats”.

I don’t get what everyone sees in Comfort. And I really didn’t like their routine. Part of what I didn’t like, too, was how different their heights are. For synchronized work, it’s awkward to me.

I don’t think the dancers have any say in the costumes.

Oh, man, that was a MEAN psych-out they just did on Jessica and Will!

Yeah, Nigel is always commenting on the costumes only to say that they’re not the dancers’ fault.

I always find it nearly impossible to figure out who is going home after the solos.
